Wow, OMG once again!!!! A FORCED ENEMA?? DOESN'T HURT THAT BAD??? I'd have decked her You're one smart woman to have him transfered, he's definitely being cared for now.

Toxic Mega Colon, as Sherry mentioned, is the fear factor for most of us. I think more so than surgery actually.

I, personally would welcome surgery. I'm sure the docs will state the urgency of it should he not show improvement and his situation worsen.

I'm in awe of your strength. I truly hope Josh is able to regain a foothold from this horrible incident.

Heres the Update: Thank you once again to everyone! Josh woke up for a little while last night and I read him everything, he really enjoyed the words of encouragement. Unfortunately he is not showing any signs of improvement. His pain is getting much worse and the doctor said he is still not responding to the medication. The doctor came in about an hour ago to talk about surgery. Josh did not take that well at all, as soon as the doctor left he started crying. He is so upset and isn't even wanting to think about having surgery, he is still trying to hold out hope. The doctor made it very clear to me that Josh is probably not going to get any better and that the surgery is most likely going to have to be done soon. I have attempted to tell Josh all the positive things about having the surgery done, but he is still very upset. Not to mention he is just feeling worse and worse physically. We still cant understand how things got so bad so fast. He was fine till about 3 months ago, and even then it was nothing like this. I am trying to be optimistic for Josh but I feel like things aren't going to get any better for him. Any suggestions on anything I can do to help him? I am trying my best to make him feel better but nothing is working. Thank you all once again for all the encouraging words & suggestions. :)

It's understandable that he would be scared about having surgery; I would be, too. But the way I see it is: He is in a ton of pain right now. If he has surgery, he won't have to worry about stuff like this anymore once he recovers. And the ileostomy is only temporary if he goes with jpouch, so once everything is said and done he'll be able to enjoy life once again!

This whole experience has been so heartbreaking to read. Please send him our way when he is doing better. *hug*

WingZero I feel the same way. I feel like if he has surgery it can only improve everything, but it is not my body. The doctor is suppose to come back in a little bit and explain everything a little better, Josh was getting so upset he wasn't listening. But thank you for the support and as soon as he is able I feel sure he will want to come here to talk to everyone.

quincy I just seen your post, but thank you for the kind words. I am praying that after talking to his doctor he will welcome the surgery as well. Right now I think he is mainly upset because he dose not understand it.

We are all hoping your husband gets through this the best way possible. He needs to understand that it may be a matter of life and death. Ask his doctor to explain this if this is the case. Life and Death. Then when you two are alone talk it over. It would really help if he could talk person to person with someone who has had the operation and hear how well they are doing now.

Oh my gosh. I just read all of your posts and I don't even know where to begin. I'm sorry doesn't even make sense -- I cannot believe that nurses and doctors could behave this way. **Eyes and mouth wide open while reading** You are one strong woman so hang in there; I'm also in awe of the support you are giving him. One thing I can say for sure is that everyone who has had UC and gone on to have the surgery was very happy to have it done, and it sounds like Josh will be relieved from so much if he does make that decision. Actually, you know what, as someone else mentioned earlier, it could be better if he undergoes surgery. It will be one time pain but he will be off medications and recurrent troubles later in his life. His quality of life will be much better in long run. He is very young and has loads of life to live. Honestly, even I considered it in the second year of diagnosis but my GI refused. The recurrent flares, pains there of and the cycles of prednisone drives you mad (trust me or read other posts on this BB). Plus the unseen side effects of Prednisone are extra pain (My muscles are so tight that I can not sit in 90 degree angle and my wife, who is a physical therapist says, its due to prednisone)
Ask the doctor to talk to him of the benefits of surgery.

Update: Josh is going to have the surgery. His X-rays and blood work today showed that everything is getting worse. Not to mention his pain is becoming unbearable. The doctor has recommend the surgery and after a very long talk and after getting more information, Josh decided it was best. His doctor is setting up everything now. Josh is mainly nervous and anxious but after hearing all the positive things about the surgery he is feeling pretty good about it all and is even joking a little. We were talking about the positive side and he told me "At least Ill never get an enema again, that's reason enough for surgery" -Referring to the awful one the nurse gave him. He told me to Thank everyone on here for him! All the encouraging words and supportive comments has made him feel a lot better! Ill update as soon as I can again. Thank you all once again! Hopefully this surgery will make everything easier on him!

I'm sorry that he had to go the drastic route such as surgery but it seems to be for the best. Toxic megacolon can be fatal but living without a colon is definitely doable. There are many people who have had the surgery and still have happy and productive lives. Send him our best and wish him well on his surgery and speedy recovery!

Give him a hug from us. I'm impressed with his enema humour! lol.

He'll move forward after the surgery. It'll be a bumpy road recovering (for you both). He's in good care for sure.

This surgery is truly the first step toward complete health! It is not an easy road but, like I said before, he will notice the difference as soon as he wakes up.

wow! I am a bit behind here, just came across this thread now and read through it all. I can't believe what has all happened since you started posting. Just amazed. I am glad that Josh has decided to go ahead with the surgery, it really does sound like it is the only answer at this point.

Kudos to you for the way you have been handling everything. It is a lot but you are taking everything in your stride and making the right decisions (like moving Josh to another hospital).

Best wishes to you both! Will be waiting to hear how the surgery goes.

Surgery will be a blessing for him. It really sucks he got so bad and meds have failed but his days of being uc sick is over. It will be a struggle recovering but life is a struggle. You guys will be happy again! Good luck and keep this post going with updates!

Ok Everyone Josh's surgery went great, he had surgery yesterday! It had to be done sooner then what was originally planed due to Josh's fever getting higher and higher and his condition getting much worse. The surgery it self went good. Josh is doing great physically and got up and walked around today. He said the surgery was not as painful as he thought it was going to be, and is actually feeling pretty well considering. The only thing is he is very nervous about the stoma, he is a little scarred of it. The doctor said that since everything happened extremely fast that Josh is probably still in shock. But Thank you all so very much for positive thoughts! I have been reading them to him all day and he is very thankful. Sorry I am a little late updating as well I was unable to get on the computer and am currently on my blackberry (& it is pretty hard to type so much on a phone!). I will try to update again as soon as I can! Thank you all so much again :) Hopefully he wont have any complications and will be able to recover quickly and go back to his normal life!

Hi BMB12,  I read all of your post.  Your husband is so lucky to have you.  He has been through so much.  I pray he finally gets some relief.  Wishing you all nothing but the best. I wish I could be there to hug you both.  Please let us know how Josh is doing as soon as you can.
