Does antibiotics help in anyway??I am gonna take rifaxamin tonight

From what I understand antibiotics do not help UC at all, if anything they can make it worse by killing the probiotics in your gut. If you are taking antibiotics you should be taking a good multi probiotic to counter the bad effects of the antibiotics.

there is a special antibiotics protocol for UC. unfortunately it seems to help only while on it.
not all antibiotics are helpful - most of them could trigger flares.

dutta, they seem to help some and not others. There are a couple users here who had great luck with the triple antibiotic combo, more info is available in the resources thread on the top of the forum. Others do well on flagyl. They say Crohn's generally responds better to antibiotics than UC but I've seen some people here have luck. I tried a few antibtiocs last time I was flaring and they didn't seem to hurt or help my condition. I didn't take extra probiotics, it seems people disagree on whether probiotics are useful while on antibiotics but regardless, I usually end up having to take diflucan after antibiotcs.

Rifaxamin also known as Xifaxin has some studies that indicate it can help UC. My GI prescribed it to me a couple years ago but it did not improve my symptoms. It helped some of my docs other patients however. Good luck to you.

I am leery of antibiotics in part because my UC manifested itself immediately after I completed a few courses of these wonder drugs. From what I've read here in the forum, this happens more often than the medical profession has shared with us. Of course everyone is different. If you are experiencing problems due to 'bad' bacteria that can't be checked through the use of probiotics, an antibiotic may be just what you need. Good luck, but don't skip taking probiotics to replenish what you need in the gut.

I buy into the theory that ibd is an underlying infection that has not yet been identified. Science does not know the majority of our guts "flora", thus, abx are often prescribed as a shot in the dark that may help. Unfortunately, specific abx can't be created until they know the bacteria they are dealing with. I recommend taking over the counter, Florastor (s. boulardi) if your taking abx.

If your tinkering with probiotics/abx and get temporary relief, then your gut flora is involved. A bacteria transplant seems to be the only thing currently effective in balancing a sick gut flora. If succesful, donor bacteria will act as an atagonist towards any infection you may have and balance your gut flora in the process. Colonization is key, 50% success for UC. I have used Xifaxan off label for years as a treatment for ulcerative colits-pancolitis.  It has worked well for me in conjunction with Pentasa  and I have been able to get insurance to cover it.  I have also paid out of pocket and it is expensive.  Cipro also worked well for me, but I unfortunately developed tendon problems which is a known side effect.  And, I agree with Trojen that this disease has an as yet unidentified bacterial basis.
