I bet in 100-150 years from now, young medics at school will be studying past world diseases and will be like: Hey guys, do you know what those people used to do back in those days to treat IBD?

They used to take those garbage meds and cut out their organs, all they had to do is take a Immuno reseter or a IBD vaccine. What a bunch of idiots, lol

So sick....

But aren't we glad we weren't born a century or more earlier? Some of us might not be reading this due to early demise.

I feel lucky in that we have options, it has come farther than where my Mom was in 1989 and got a bag. I hope that at least what I am going through could help someone else.......other times I throw a pity party (but not too much ; )

Look at all those people that died in the past from small pox, chicken pox, measles, mumps or was crippled by polio....in this day and age those things are a thing of the past. So I truly and fervently hope and pray that it will be the same in the future regarding IBD!

Did ulcerative colitis exist more than 100 years ago? I have tried to look this up but I have not found it. It may be something new that is brought on by our overly-sanitized environment.

Yes, it did exist. They just didn't have a name for it. My great grandmother had either Uc or Crohn's.

i think about this all the time! my mom has crohns/colitis (they've never been super clear with her on which/how that happens) and while she's been in remission for several years (knock on wood) she tells me a lot about what she went through in the mid-80s and i'm always just shocked by how far they've come. i try to stay optimistic too!

I have read that a disease resembling UC was mentioned in Roman texts and for civilizations without permanent or recovered records we have no way of knowing. No it's not a new disease for some populations but incidences of UC are becoming more noted in new populations more so now than in the past such as 3rd world countries and Asian countries. The question remains to be answered is whether the reporting is better (more access to doctors) or the incidences are greater.

     My paternal grandmother died from cancer of the rectum and she suffered the same exact symptoms as I suffered when I had ulcerative proctitis.  That is one of the major reasons I had the surgery.  She happened to die at the same age I am now...65.

My great grandma, born in 1900, had UC, or something like it, and they didn't have indoor plumbing until the 60's. I think how awful that would be if you were flaring and had to use an outhouse!
Ostomies have been being done for hundreds and hundreds of years, napoleon had one, I found references even further back than that. And boy I'm glad I didn't have that then!

It's existed in the past, but definitely hasnt been as prevalent until now. It's pretty obvious its a combination of the dirty environment, quality of food and lifestyle overall. It's not that our bodies hate ourselves (even though it sure as hell feels like it sometimes).

I really don't feel the same way about the people who died hundreds of years ago from diseases that are now treatable. These things just weren't available at their time, so they had to make do with what they had.

I try not to think about things like this since it drives me even crazier.
