Hi everyone

Happy New Year!  Boy, we are SO glad to put 2011 behind us. WORST YEAR EVER!

Paige had takedown surgery on Wed 12/28 and was released from the hospital today! tongue

She is getting used to her "new colon" and it's been an adventure to say the least. When she has pain, she gets so scared that she is going to go back to feeling like she did when she had a UC flare shakehead   and says she wants the bag back! shocked    I know it is going to take a while before she feels comfortable with the Jpouch, just as it did with the bag.

It is so nice to be home...she cannot WAIT until she gets the OK to take a long, hot bath (probably another week)  Let's hope that was her last hospital visit for a VERY, VERY long time and that she can get back to being a happy & healthy 13 year old smilewinkgrin

I am so happy for her. Please let me know how the road to relearning how to use the new "colon" works. I think there is an adjustment period but once she heals a bit, she's going to be so thankful this is all in the past. No more UC worries ever again. I know you would have preferred for her to get into remission with medication but even when we get into remission, the UC is always in the back of our minds impeding our ability to live the way we wish to. It's going to be a blessing to live life without this illness & drugs. So many j-pouchers tell me they wish they hadn't wasted so much time with medicine. I hope to hear the same from Paige once she's healed.

Glad she is home and doing well...it will all be worth it in the end and all this yucky part will be just a memory. Happy New Year to you both!

Yea!!  I have my 1 year anniversary from step 1 of 2 in two days!!!  I think due to her age she should do even better than I have done.  It's a new normal for me, but UC was not normal either and this is SO much better than that.  She will probably have a lot of gas with pain at first and she needs to learn to hold it for a bit so the pouch can be trained.  Immodium, metamucal, beano, Calmoseptine and probiotics have been my friends this past year.  Until I used all of those I was really uncomfortable.  I go anywhere from 4-8 times a day with an average of 6 times.  I usually sleep through the night.  My New Year's wish is that she finally gets her life back!!

Any update on Paige? I am thinking about you guys, hoping she's feeling well - like her preUC self :)

Hi!

She is doing well :). She's been fortunate in the fact she hasn't had the massive trips to the toilet...maybe 10 at the most and that is rare. Her incision is icky looking, but dr says it is normal since it heals from the inside out. Right now it looks like an open mouth with some gunk in it!
Her iron levels are still very low (7.8 and normal is 12) so she is taking lots of supplements. We are planning for her to go back to school on January 30th....keep your fingers crossed!

I remember I was so miserable the first few weeks that at my 3 week mark when I saw my surgeon I actually asked for my ostomy back. I can look back and say-What was I even thinking!

That's great. I don't know how I missed your reply but I am very happy to hear she's doing so well. :)

It must be liberating to never have to worry about UC again!! Best of luck to Paige and your family - it looks like 2012 is looking up.

I am 45 and have had my J pouch over 20 years now. If you ,or your daughter have questions, I am happy to try to be of help. I pray my son and daughter don't get UC. It's hard enough to go through this yourself but if my kids had it.....well...I am just hoping they don't.

As for me, I've done well with my J pouch and am so glad I did it.

My sister has had her J pouch for 20 years too with zero issues. It's so nice to know they have a long "shelf life"! My j pouch is still a baby. :)

Can they redo j pouches? I mean, lets say you can live 20 years more...so total 40 years or so. Can the J pouch last indefinetly.
