Early indicators before your first-ever flare?

Just curious whether anyone had any early problems that, in retrospect, were an early indication of UC.

I was recently diagnosed with UP. I finally went to the doctor after just over 2 months of blood with every bowel movement (on stool & tissue).

A few days before the bleeding started, I had very bad pain over in lower right quadrant. My recent colonoscopy showed everything looked fine in that region, so maybe the pain was from adhesions from a prior appendectomy.

Anyway, in the 5-6 months before the bleeding started, I had 4 odd episodes (that's how I think of them, as episodes), where in the evening, I developed an extreme bloated feeling, a feeling of being very very over-full. Accompanying that would be continuous burping and terrible heartburn that felt like it was in the top of the back of my throat. Then the next day, usually mid-day, I'd get horrible urgency for bms and vomit while having the bm. This happened 4 different times over those months, and each time it lasted just the 2 days.

When I told this to the GE doc, he told me my symptoms didn't make any sense.

Has anyone else ever had weird episodes like that? I'd like to think it's all related to the UP diagnosis, because otherwise it means there's possibly two problems, not just one!

     I remember very vividly my first symptoms.  I suffered with IBS for years but right before my Ulcerative Proctitis started I was on the Atkins Diet for two weeks.  The doctor said it was just a coincidence but you can't make me believe that.  Anyway, it started with mucus in my stools, then my condition deteriorated rapidly....urgency, bleeding, loss of 15lbs in one month.   I made an appointment with a GI doctor but he couldn't see me for two weeks.  I never made it those two weeks.  My husband had to take me to the hospital with chills, fever of 102 and terrible bloody diarrhea..ugh, just awful.

My daughter had "weird stomach aches" for about 6 months before she had her first flare, we thought it was lactose intolerance, but it didn't matter what she ate. Thanksgiving 2008, she started having blood, pain, fevers..you name it, she had it.
Our dr said it is very common to vomit while having a strained BM . You use certain muscles that can trigger the vomiting reflex, and some people are more sensitive than others

No, nothing. I was fine one day and VERY sick the next. I thought I had food poisoning but it never went away

I only vaguely remember symptoms from my childhood. I always had a nervous/anxious disposition to begin with and was always iron deficient for some reason. As time went on, I think my stomach symptoms began, but I don't really have a lot of memories of having stomach aches really.

I never had any early indicators before my first flare. Started seeing a little blood on the toilet paper for about a month, then got extremely constipated, then the diarrhea started, and debilitating gut pain and proceeded to get sicker and sicker while I went to multiple doctors, each telling me I just had fissures or the stomach flu...until I finally found one who took me seriously. :)

Before my UC I was fine.  I would go to the bathroom maybe every other day and it was formed and normal.  The first time I "noticed something"(which I didn''t think anything about at the time" was in Sep. of 2007 my brother got married and the night of the wedding I was drinking(not alot but enough to feel a buzz) anyways, the next day we were driving to the gift opening and we had stopped to eat mexican food and on the way to the gift opening I had to go to the bathroom so bad and my husband was driving and we were on the freeway and I started yelling at him to get off right now and find a bathroom ASAP and I just made it.  I truely think this was my first "symptom".  I get pregnant around this time and when I was about 5 months pregnant I was having diarreah and urgency.  I said something to the ob and I she said it could just be the pregnancy and if it keeps happening when I had the baby to go to the GI she said they wouldn't do anything anyways since i was pregnant.  When I had my child in June of 2008 things went downhill fast but I still kept thinking it was something I was eating(like milk) I ended up having two accidents and figured this wasn't "normal" So, I went to the doctor in March of 2009 and was diagnosed with UC.  I truely think my first issues was the afternoon after the wedding.

I had retired from a very stressful job and decided it was time to adopt a healthy lifestyle. So...I began eating lots of fibrous vegetables and 12-grain breads, etc.

On a trip to China, we went to the Great Wall. Others took the chair lift to the top.
I got familiar with Great Wall plumbing features (you don't want to know).
Noticed that every time I ate, I had to find bathrooms.

After returning home, the blood showed up and I went to my first gastroenterologist. After my first colonoscopy, she said my colon looked like I had dragged it there behind my car. (Thought she was a comedian.)
Anyway she was my "first" GI doc because she insisted that I take prednisone.

I'm sure there were signs when I was very young...even in Middle School when I was stressed, I suffered from gastric disturbances. In later years, when work was particularly stressful, same thing happened.
I took a lot of ibuprophen at certain times to get me through the day. In hindsight, I think that was a major contributor to the UC that followed.

I did not get diagnosed with UC until after retirement, for which I am very thankful. I can't imagine how some of you can work and deal with this disease.

I started out with constipation and slight, very faint traces of blood, plus stomach aches. This went on for a couple of months before I finally went to a walk-in clinic, as I did not have a family doctor at the time. The clinic doctor said it was constipation and the blood was from internal hemorrhoids resulting from straining. He told me to take Ex-Lax for consecutive days up to a week max.

What a mistake! It sure solved the constipation, the flood gates were opened. But what it caused was full-fledged UC diarrhea/blood, going to the bathroom ridiculous number of times a day, severe abdominal pains and cramping... you know, the usual UC stuff, LOL. Finally went to a real doctor and eventually got a diagnosis after I had already begun spontaneous remission. Interestingly, remission began with a return to the constipation that started the whole thing.

      My first symptoms were I had an excessive amount of gas.  I would be walking and pass gas.  It was embarassing!lol I just brush it off as something I ate.  I had constipation real bad.  I would go to the bathroom because I felt like I had to and nothing would happen.  I can remember thinking what is wrong with me.  I increase my fiber and started eating Activia.  Right after I started with the Activia the blood came.  I went to the bathroom and blood just came out.  I thought I would pass out right there on the toliet. I thought it has to be the Activia.  I stop eating the Activia yogurts and in two weeks the blood stop.  Well, I thought everyting was okay.  Two years later it came back with a vengeance. Every bowel movement came with blood and mucus.  If I passed gass blood and mucus came out.   At first I thought maybe this is going to be like the last time.  No, I was wrong.  I waited a month before going to the dr.  She told me it was hemmies.  I told her I would like to make sure so she schedule me with a GI.  The GI was like it may be just hemorrhoids.  I guess because I didn't have diarrhea.  So she decide to just do a colonoscopy anyway. Good thing, because it wasn't a hemmie.  I have ulcerative proctitis.  I'm glad I had the scope.  My GI even said I'm so glad you had this scope.
