Gluten free, dairy free (with cream in coffee as only allowance), low fiber (no fruits with skin), cooked veggies only, very few gas producing things like beans/brocolli.
Many supplements:
VSL#3, Vit. C, Vit. D3, slippery elm, Curcumin (4000mg daily), Omega 3's (3000 mg daily)
Lialda 4 tabs daily.
Just got off prednisone after a 6 month flare.

I eat healthy because I like to eat a certain way but I have gone through phases where I've changed my diet and it hasn't impacted my UC. I wish I was able to conrol my symptoms better with diet.
On the other hand, I have LPR and I think I am going to have to change my diet drastically to manage the reflux. I've noticed diet almost instantly causing me problems with my LPR.

No diet because I don't believe food causes flares or controls flares.
BUT....food acts accordingly in the digestive tract to help stimulate peristalsis, help digestion, help constipation, help diarrhea, help exercise the colon, help calm down spasming, etc. Some foods don't agree with everyone, and it only makes sense to avoid foods that cause discomfort/gas, especially when flaring.
I eat fairly balanced, but do avoid some foods that cause me discomfort. I don't consume many things that others do. I consume some things that others wouldn't.

I adopted the SCD about 4 months ago when I was still on Prednisone and looking for a bona-fide solution to my UC blues. I had no dramatic results from SCD because I adopted the diet after many of my problems were being managed by prescription drugs. However, my symptoms have improved over time. Whether the diet helped or I naturally improved/healed over the course of time isn't clear, but I do know a good diet is a key to anyone's health. I added rice to my diet with no problems and will slowly add other non-SCD foods over time. Being on a simple diet over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and now Lunar (Chinese) New Year has been a bit of a challenge, but I have great expectations for the future.

I try to eat what I consider a healthy diet (everyone has their own notion of what is or isn't healthy!) but not specifically to avoid a flare. I do think that keeping oneself healthy can help avoid a flare or at least minimize the negative impact of a flare same as any other illness.

I avoid certain foods that may contribute to my flares. If it bothers me, I delete it!

soystud the top 2 are very similar, but trying to determine difference between a diet given to the you by someone to follow verses foods you have ruled out because they may upset you or make flares worse. I was given a diet to follow which I am doing and stick too fairly well I just wondered how everyone else does it when it comes to using food to help regulate the body. Alot of what I have read talks about less processed food, as it can upset the colon.

There are certain items I avoid entirely, like caffeine, carbonated drinks, most citrus, potato chips, MSG, artificial colors, heavy salt, spice, animal fats, heavy sugar-- but I do not follow a specific diet plan. Boiled rice has been my grace food for yrs: Old Faithful! / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Old Hat all those things you mentioned are not in my diet is you boiled rice brown like mine? Do you drink rice milk? I drink almost 1 litre a day now. Just came home from work at 11pm and made a bowl of gucamole ate it with gluten free poppy seed crackers it was great. Is Colazal a type of medication? I am lucky I am now not on any medication at all.

I wish I had known this years ago. I've lived in the same goddarn town Ben & Jerrys is made for most of my life and grew up eating the stuff, all through college too!
This sounds ridiculous but I was so bored one day that I went on their website and wrote a pleading letter to them asking to take that ingredient out of the ice cream so i could live happily again.

mum...you focused only on the control of UC. Many of us avoid foods/use foods to change stool/digestive activity, but not for UC control.
Because....we don't believe food causes flares or controls them.

I am on a diet where sugars, fruits and dairy is avoided alltogether. After 9 months of quite strong flare up got into remission without medications. I am in remission since October last year.
Currently not taking any meds, very few supplements, and feeling better than ever.
Cheers

That's scary about the carageenan. It's in so many foods. Another good reason to eat less processed foods.

I did not know carageenan was in ice cream i started eating lots of icecream when 4 years ago when I started dairy nightfill at Cole's supermarket. This would have contributed to my condition. I have been dairy free since sept 2011. Well done Win UC and Dorrs12 we are lucky that diet helps us mind you I am VERY STRICT with my diet as if I stray bad things happen but HEH! I am MEDICATION free Yeah Baby!! and am currently loving life while this lasts and am very grateful that it works for me as many other are not so lucky.
