I remember that the flare I'm going through right now started around the same time I caught a cold. I don't know if that's what triggered it, but my GI says that it's possible. Now it looks like I'm about to catch another cold, and right when my bleeding has finally reduced after two weeks of 5-ASA enemas. Is this going to worsen the flare or are the meds going to keep it under control this time?

Also, has anyone else ever flared up during or after a cold?

yup, having a cold related flare right now. happens everytime and it SUCKS. ramp up on the enemas if you can and try to relax until it's gone. good luck Max.

The enemas aren't covered by my insurance and I only have 14 more left. They were supposed to last me until the middle of February. :(

I keep asking people to kindly keep their distance from me if they have a cold, but they don't think it's anything serious. Not for them, at least.

That sucks. How can they not cover enemas? If you have a script and a perscription plan they have to cover them no? Maybe people here have ideas on how/where to buy generic online?
I know but you're not going to be able to avoid catching a cold at this point in the year. we are just dreading something worse like the flu. hope the flare passes with the cold, it can do that too btw.

I'm not sure. I heard that they cover the 4g enemas, but not the 2g ones which I'm on right now. My doctor gave me a prescription for the 2g ones only, and I'm not sure why. Maybe because I'm already on the max dose for oral 5-ASAs?

try to submit them? did they already reject them? with a script they should accept them?
i would challenge that, get your gi to write a note if you have to>

Just call up your GI and explain you need a script for the 4g ones because the others aren't covered by insurance. Shouldn't be a problem. Even when I was on the maximum amount of Lialda I still can use the 4g enemas.

colds are typically caused by something we ate so it only makes sense that a u.c. flare may come with it.

Are you sure that I'm not going to get any side effects by going on 4g oral and 4g rectal of mesalamine? That seems like overdosage to me. Also are the bottles bigger for the 4g enemas? I'm using the Salofalk ones right now, not Rowasa.

First, I believe colds are caused by exposure to certain types of virus germs (can't think of the exact names). I used to get a lot more when I was a teacher because I was in constant contact with germ carriers. Now I get them going shopping and to the gym (I think).

Since your insurance coverage is limited, have you looked into the possibility of using slippery elm in an enema?
There are lots of posts about its uses in this Forum and info at the website cureforulcerativecolitis.com under the alternative treatments (?) category.

Forgot to mention that I use Zicam(zinc) products to lessen symptoms and duration of a cold. Can get them at a drugstore. I buy the spray which is applied in the mouth, under the tongue,etc. and the Liquid-Loz.

My cousin was a nurse at a veteran's hospital where they would always "share" colds. The doctor recommended the use of Zicam and vitamin C to stop the spread.

I have been SOOO lucky this year. The winter here has been non existent. My allergies have kicked me in the butt
a couple of times but I have yet to catch cold.

My white count is extremely high, so maybe thats why, I dunno-

This time my flare started right at the end of decemeber. I had been deer hunting like I always do. At the deer camp had a bowl of ramen style soup with meat added to to, some deer tenderloin. Good stuff. Got home 3 hours later with a BAD headache. I dont know if it was from the night before, getting hot in the cabin or what, but I slept all afternoon. Prior to this about 8 days, I had a flu shot that I normally never get.
Coincidence? I dont know.
I got a little better over the next day, but then later I was feverish and all and well I was sick with something.
Then the flare hit and I am struggling to get out of it.
Currently on asacol 3x aday and pred, tapering, and canasa at night in the bum

Max-my Lialda tabs are 1.2 grams apiece and I can take up to 4 of them. I use the 4 gram Rowasa and have never had a problem. I don't know about bottle size as I've never used the 2 gram. I think I remember someone saying its the same size just has more of the medication in it.

2g and 4g dosage bottle sizes are in the same amount of liquid...so yes..the bottles are the same.

This is just some random cold info, I went to the pharamacy because I started getting a cold a week before our cruise! Eep! And I got zicam, but the pharamcist also suggested loading up on vitamin d, said that really helps also! I don't know if it does or not, had the cold about 3 days. You might try adding the vitamin D to your regimen, according to him it also helps keepyou from getting sick also.
