I had my overnight stay in the hospital for my kidney biopsy. Thankfully my GI Had prescribed me Pred to get me out of a flare because I was bedridden for 24 hours. I am now tapering at 30 mg. and he wants me to start 6mp. He has done my liver test and thinks I will tolerate it well since I am off the ASAs forever due to kidney damage. At this point I feel so good on Pred that I would probably do anything to never flare again.... so 6mp here I come. Any advice? Suggestions?

I have no suggestions for you. 6mp is still hard on the liver, but it's also used to deal with liver problems....so hope all goes well for you...

What liver test did you have done?

What happened to your kidneys, was it from the mesalamines? I have minimal change disease, protein loss in my urine from them. I am doing good on remi now

You should have no trouble with 6-MP. As you wean off the Prednisone over the next few months the 6-MP should kick in.
Your Dr will do frequent lab test to make sure your liver function is good and your white count doesn't drop too low.
I hope it can knock you into a solid remission for many many years!

Yes I went from 0.60 creatnine to 3.0 in 8 months while being on Apriso. My GI never once checked my kidney function and I landed in the hospital last summer. My kidneys have been slow to bounce back so I had a kidney biopsy this past weekend to see if I have permanent damage or if there is a treatment. My creatnine level is at 1.5 now. I can no longer take the mesalalines so my new GI wants to put me on 6mp now while I am tapering off the Pred. It seems to be a good drug for some and he has assured me he will be doing frequent blood work.
Here's hoping to getting and staying into remission!

My body tolerated 6mp fairly well. Unfortunately, I can not get into the therapeutic range. But many people on 6mp do very well on it. It's good that your doctor is going to be doing frequent blood work - it shows that he is on his game. :) I've been on 6mp for about 5 or 6 years now. It wasn't enough to get me into remission which is why I'm on Remicade as well. I hope this does the trick for you and that you reach a great remission!

Keep in mind tho, that 6mp is not an instant medication. It can take several weeks or months before you notice an improvement.

The damage to your kidneys should not be permanent, as you were on the Apriso for only 8 months.  I have met 2 others who have the same kidney disease from the mesalamines and they got better.  I am not in remission yet, but my BUN and creatinine are good as long as I stay hydrated, I was also on the mesalamines for 7 years before I found out that was the problem for my kidneys.

Let us know what they come back with from the biopsy.

My creatnine has not bounced back. It has slowly come down a bit but staying at 1.5 or 1.6 so she did the biopsy to see if the damage is permanent or reversible with medication.

Does anyone know how much 6mp runs? Is there a generic?

I have never seen a brand name called just 6mp so I am not sure if what I get is generic or not. It's called mercaptopurine. I have insurance so my copay is $5 (which is what we pay for generic and $10 for brand) - so it must be the generic I get! lol Anyway, I am not 100% sure how much it is but if I recall right, it's less than $100.
