Deltaforce, I do them without sedation, and they're just fine. If you prefer them without sedation, your doctor should be able to honor the request. (And, even if I were being sedated, I wouldn't trust a doctor who said it can't be done.)
There's ample research to show that most people handle unsedated scopes just fine. The near universal use of sedation in the US is a product of medico-legal CYA and public perception of the exam.
As for the article, there's a difference between what the study showed (polyp removal v. not) and what the headline stated.
