I am unable to retain the foam for more than 3 hours unless i take some pain killers to knock me out.
I experience severe abdominal cramping, loads of gas & urgency to go- but not alot comes out.
Should I have another dose after expelling the first dose or would 3 hours be enough.
I have noticed improvement with the foam- bleeding has stopped & mucus is subsiding but am feeling very bloated and constipated.

I do mesalamine enemas and try to hold it in for at least 90 mins. Most nights I get it to stay in 2-3 hrs. It works best if I do it after evacuating the bowel. It seems to be working for me as my symptoms have improved since I began using them a few months ago.

Patience patience!
Have been using the salofalk enemas for months now. It gets easier with time and heard through this site that even if you cant retain them as often as you like the med still does its wonders to your body.
I experienced some kind of constipation too. I called it constipated diarrhea lol
When are you doing your enemas? I tried both during the day and before bedtime and found it easier nightly. Just do them when i feel im sleepy, go to bed, insert the enema, watch some kind of program on laptop until i fell asleep wich isnt long after the enema! Best way to keep them is to sleep on your left side!

3 hours is great and as you continue to use them you should be able to retain them longer. You still may be keeping some of it in if not alot comes out. Are you using a probiotic? It may help with the bloating and gas.

3 hours is awesome if you just started using them. As others said, once the inflammation calms down, you'll be able to retain it longer.
ARe you using them at night?
ARe you on oral mesalamine as well?
Where is the extent of your UC...limited or throughout?
welcome to the forum!

likely the discomfort is related to the irritation/condition of the mucosal lining. I would ask for a few bottles of a hydrocortisone enema to see if you get the same problem. IF you do, it is likely the mucosa. If you do not, you might be having a reaction to the Mesalazine.
Might be good to know one way or the other before you either give up or tough it out.
good luck
