Is this possible? I woke up at midnight with horrible cramping and had to go to the bathroom. Mostly just mucus came out with a small amount of bright red blood. Also experiencing tenesmus (sp?). I've gone to the bathroom upwards of 25 times since midnight, mostly passing mucus but occasionally passing very thin, mushy stool.
This literally came on overnight and I can't pinpoint what might've triggered it. I've had some suspicions about
the increased dose of Lialda I've been on, but maybe it was something I ate? The doctors office doesn't
open until tomorrow and I'm feeling very miserable today. My intestines feel very sore and swollen. I'm afraid to eat anything. I don't know what to do. :\

Maybe just an intestinal bug? I always try to think that if it just hits you like that or of course something weird that you ate. The 25 times since midnight is concerning though. I would try an immodium if your still going.

I would say don't eat or drink anything in case you need surgery, ...and get to the ER.

If you really think it's from the Lialda, reducing the dose may help you to improve. I am sorry you're having so much trouble so quickly. I tend to think there isn't one trigger but that it's a progression over time, otherwise I go crazy trying to figure out the trigger. I am with sherbear, maybe it's a bug, let's try to think positive. I am surprised your GI doesn't have a number you can call to have him/her paged. Did you call the answering service to see if it's possible to get in touch?

It could be a bug. My family had the diarrhea bug a little while ago (I think my sister is just recovering from it) and they came over two days ago. I also ate wheat/gluten for the first time in a while a couple days ago, too, and I'd wondered if that might've caused this.
My GI is pretty terrible. There is an urgent care facility I can go to if it gets bad, but I'm not really in a lot of pain per se. Just going to the bathroom a lot and my stomach feels like it's got a second heart beat or something going on from the inflammation. I might end up going later on.

Because UC is an autoimmune disease a flares can be sudden and severe and out of the blue. So you may be flaring.

Go sooner than later. Get hydrated and eat only things you know its woring for you. I would only eat jello style of food or rice water to help to constipate a bit.
Sorry to hear you are feeling like this.

It could be a gut-bug...tis the season. But it could also be a flare, yes, flares can come on quickly with a vangance. Reason why is because it's a stupid, ignorant disease and more often than not, has a crappy mind of it's own (sensing some bitterness that I feel towards IBD) I'm so annoyed with IBD lately, must be cuz this is 21 yrs now that I've had it with no full remission.

I've had two flares and they didn't just hit me overnight or one day so I never got really bad like I was before diagnosis. Not saying it doesn't happen because it obviously has for some but I've been lucky and had "warning" and increased meds and got on pred before it got bad. I'm thinking because you said people who had a bug were just at your house...I'm leaning more toward that. Feel better!

You've been complaining for a while now regarding symptoms, so I wouldn't say it's overnight. Fares have symptoms on a continuum...they get accelerated when not enough medications are administered...and we get really scared when they've reached the limit of our acceptance that it's something else.
I'd say you're flaring for sure. I've stated you were flaring over a month ago. But, you might also have something else going on as well.
But I won't suggest rectal meds....just because you'll get mad at me.
Hope your doc can help get you feeling better soon, it pains me to see you suffering for so long.

Doubtfully it's something you ate. Food wouldn't cause such severity. Unfortunately that's UC for you...a flare will come out of the blue. Mine always did. I would get to your doctor as soon as you can...you don't want to become dehydrated. That's a lot of bathroom visits. Hope you feel better very soon.

Could this be as a result of yourgoingback to gluten, wheat, dairy?
I hope you feel better soon.

Food poisoning can cause this kind of reaction, so in that regard it can be brought on by something you ate and it often happens violently in the case of food poisoning as well.

I've had food poisoning a few times and it's always involved throwing up for me. I've never seen blood with food poisoning but I had intense D, cramps, sweating, and vomiting. I hope this is just a bug and you're feeling better. Any update on your condition? Thinking about
you.

I've never had a stomach bug that caused bleeding with D...like I said, IBD flares can come on very suddenly and with vengance (speaking from my own experiances).
Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

I second what Quincy said...You have posted here during the past month complaining that the lialda isn't working. You also mentioned that your moron of a GI (excuse my language but i think this is the descript
ion that bests suits an idiot that says rectal meds don't help in pancolitis) won't prescibe rectals becaue they don't help. But he is happy apparently to prescribe prednisone- a drug with serious side effects.
For your GI's information studies have shown that only VERY SMALL amounts of the oral meds actually reach the rectum, AND that the disease starts in the rectum, AND that the rectum is the hardest to treat. All of these 3 points necessitate that rectal meds be used.
Please change GIs. And start on rectal meds. Im sure there must be a way for the uninsured to to get meds.
Please keep us posted.

I do believe that flares and arrive overnight. Greenuc started a prolific thread about
this subject last month:

I believe Greenuc then posted saying that was a mild transient reaction that did not recur. And he also said that happened after he ate out in a restaurant the night before. So it seems like he was not flaring rather it was either food poisoning or a reaction to a food he ate.

I think small amounts of food poisoning that would not effect healthy people do that too me. I just chug some p-seed powder with vsl$3 and start over, eat some fish and I am fine in 24 hours.

Thanks for the info everyone. It must have been something I ate because I'm doing better today - not great, but definitely better. Frequency stopped sometime in the afternoon yesterday and now I'm pretty much just back to where I was prior to whatever happened the previous night. I'm getting some entocort (oral) today.

That's exactly how my last flare started. Came on sudden and virulent. So yes, it is possible.
