Great NYTimes Article, Regulating our sugar intake.
Please support this senator. I am sure, rest of the Republicans hate her from bottom of their hearts.

Interesting.
I'm from Europe. Been living in States for 8 years and still wonder how can anybody eat meat with honey or sugar "glaze" on it? It's just an example. But everything here is sweeter than in Europe. Even dark chocolate has more carbs from sugar. Living here with my habits from there, I find it hard to limit the sugar intake within my family. Yet, still have the final word, as my kids are small and my husband is also from Europe. Looking on the shelves in the grocery store, it doesn't wander that people eat that stuff. One - they are used to it so much that anything less sweet doesn't taste right. Two - there is not too much choice on the shelves. Sad but true.

So we are riding the same boat, although I am not an European national, been living in Europe (Eire and Sweden specifically) for last 10 years and moving to the US was a culture shock. Even after a year now, I find MANY things baffling (and I ask DW, why these folks do it this way when the other way is better as in Europe :)

If going to the grocery store isn't a torture enough, going to a restaurant is a nightmare. I wonder how people eat fried cheese !!!

Finally all my *****in' about sugar seems to be paying off. I used to be a super sugar junkie and have often felt like it was no wonder I ended up with IBD (I'm well aware that many who have never been a sugar freak still get IBD as well) just pointing out that it certainly and most likely makes it worse for chronic diseases....and too much (which is what most people get) sugar isn't good for anyone, chronic health issues or not and it's not necessary either.

A few weeks ago on my local news they discussed that the Canadian FDA is finally making steps to put warnings on high sugar items....it's about time. I just wish they could go further than that, like forcing companies not to add over a certain "safe amount" to call it that liberally anyways since I don't think any amount is necessarily safe.

I am a firm believer that people should eat whatever they want. But the original purpose of food stamps was to provide food and nutritional sustenance for poor people who cannot afford good nutrition. Food stamps for potato chips and soda does not provide nutritional sustenance.

This is another example of corporations taking control of our government. They took control of programs designed to provide nutrition to the poor and transformed those programs to inflate profits for Big Food like Coca-Cola and Pepsi Corporation. Instead of helping poor people we are encouraging them to eat junk.

The manufacturers of junk food/beverages should have strict guidelines to make their products way less junky.

I can buy a bag of apples cheaper than a bag of chips, McDonalds isn't as cheap as it used to be, in essence the junk food manufactuers are still serving up poor quality crap and the price tag on it is higher so they are clearly profiting more than ever because it's pennies for their cost to make the garbage they make.

All in all though, even if they put way less sugar in their products, if many people only eat sugary products more than anything else, their diet will still suffer...people do know better, many just don't want to make the changes for themselves.

I love the idea of limiting what can be bought with food stamps, we already have wic which is pretty much food stamps with directions. And especially now, when so much medicaid and medicare dollars are spent on obesity related diseases!
If the govt put a tax on junk food or useless food (coke,cake,chips,koolaid,juice,icecream,etc...) People would still buy it, and we could pay for a healthcare system! People would still buy it, we still buy alcohol and tobacco. And as odd as it sounds sugar is more dangerous.
I eat junk food, I just got done with some fried cheese actually, and I don't think there is anyway to get people to stop eating junk,nor do I think that's a good idea. However,let's at least make a little money off it!

I do think there is too much sugar in our processed foods, and as a consumer I would like to let companies know there is a demand for less-sugar products (not artificial sweeteners, but just plain less sugar), but I don't need someone in my kitchen telling me what I should and shouldn't eat.

It's a real catch 22, but in reality it seems many do need someone to monitor somehow what they are eating...true, smokers especially carry the brunt of the health care systems in north america being burdened with health issues, but obesity can also cause some of the very same health issues that smoking causes...and often that obesity stems from too much sugar/poor diet.

I think the warning lables won't necessarily stop the same people from buying those products, just as the warning labels on cigarette packages don't necessarily stop people from smoking and neither does taxing them, but it does get some to stop (usually the tax does compared to the warning labels) afterall it's not like people don't know what smoking and high consumption of sugar does to their bodies/health.

I believe it's just become a way of life for people. My hubby and I eat and prepare our meals at home because we like to eat from farm to table without all the preservatives. And we read labels. For instance, yesterday we were looking for a natural peanut butter -- one that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup and other junk in it and we wondered, why would peanut butter need all the other stuff in it? Why not just peanuts? We will now attempt to make our own, but still questioned why all the extra additives were needed -- and in so many of our foods. I actually find it less expensive to buy fresh veggies, fruit, seafood, and meat than to buy anything packaged.
