predisone not working for my flare dr. wants to discuss other options i need help

I would like some positive feedback for the drugs that come after mesalamines and steriods.... ??? like remicade or imuran? not even sure can you take these drugs for a short amount of time? which ones do people have the easiest time on? does anyone believe that there is a just as good alternative therapy besides remicade etc? thank you for any feed back , i am just trying to get an overall idea of what i am looking at

prednisone was also not working for me so my doctor added 6mp and remicade. i ended up being able to taper off the prednisone while i was on these drugs. i noticed an immediate decrease in symptoms when i started 6mp even though my doctor doesn't think it's possible. she said it takes 3 months for it to build up in your body, but i went from 12 bms a day on prednisone to 5-6 bms a day on 6mp. unfortunately, i had to stop the 6mp because my liver enzymes were consistently high as well as my WBC and low RBC. remicade stopped working after 5 infusions so i'm not on that anymore either. you just have to try different medications so see if they will help. i am waiting to get fecal transplant done and hope that will put me into remission.

good luck with FT!! and i appreciate your feedback . any particular reason you dont take slippery elm or l glutamine?? just curious? i dont take em but i was looking into and FT for that matter:)

i am not taking slippery elm or l-glutamine anymore just because they didn't make a difference. i was choking down 2 tbsp of slippery elm a day and i tried different amounts of l-glutamine for diarrhea. it just never made a difference. i've noticed psyllium husk helping more than those.

You should ask about trying LDN. It has no drug interactions with any of these aforementioned medicines and can only help, the cost is extremely low so that shouldn't be much of a factor in your decision. Best of luck.

myuc just posted how well he is doing on imuran.  maybe he has some input on how it has helped him

Since I have started LDN on 3/23 I have not gone to the bathroom more than twice in a day. Formed, no blood, no cramping, no urgency. Now before I started the LDN I was down to around 3-4 times a day. My full list of meds are in my sig, I don't know how much of it can be credited to the LDN and I know it takes around a month to get to full strength in your system but I recommend it to EVERYONE.

I started 6mp in March 2011. I am currently on 12.5MG of pred and tapering down by 2.5 every 3 days.

I know that Remicade works well for those who don't respond to pred. You can also use it to achieve remission before weaning off onto something else. Many countries use it as a rescue med, the US however, use it for long term maintenance? Assuming your UC is moderate to severe, I think its worth trying. EXTREMELY expensive though!
