Hi , my GI dr said that 4 tbs 3x day is too much of asacol and can cause diarhea. Anyone heard of this?
He only wanted me to take 2 tabs 3x a day. Check my sig for current meds.

I was taking 12 per day for years.  There is a new Asacol that has more active ingredient in it that you can take less of.  Maybe that is what the doctor is talking about?

I guess 12 is a lot.  when I used to get my monthly Asacol prescriptions refilled, sometimes the pharmacy would question the amount.

when i was on asacol, i was on 16 a day. Then i switched to Lialda

Does anyone feel that too much asacol caused diarhea? My doc said, mesalamines just extend remission or maintain it. He said steriods,6mp, and monoclonals are the ones that give remission. Let me know if this sounds right. For me mesalamines never gave me remission , I have been taking for past 13 yrs and still no full remission.

I'm on 12/day (400 mg) and have been since 2007. It's the dosage that gets me into remission and keeps me there. Anything less won't. He wants you on an extremely low maintenance dose. Are you currently flaring?

Your doctors flat out wrong about mesalamines not getting people into remission! I've never been on any of the other drugs and I was flaring very severely when first diagnosed. They don't give me diarrhea. They do make my stools "mushy" but that's not a big deal.

Hi sara, yea I figured my dr is wrong, otherwise why wld so many patients take it. Im glad it is working or u. I think for me it doesnt put me in remission even the enema version never did.

I just added 4 tabs 3xdaily. I started noticing some mucous and bleeding. I do not get diarrhea. It does seems to get the bleeding under control. I will probably add Rowasa a couple nights to help. My GI is the one who suggested to add the extra Asacol.

I've never heard of Asacol giving people D, but about the dosage:
When flaring, i am on the same dose as you, 4 tabs 3xdaily.
When the flare subsides, I lower my dose and get to 2 tabs daily when feeling well.
I think whatever side effects are minimized when you can keep the dose low and when flares come, you can blast it with the bigger dose.
Thats my theory and I'm sticking to it.

Is the Asacol 800mg or 400mg? That sounds like alot wow. I have to imagine it is when your flaring that yo take that much. I have very mild small section of uc that seems to be managed with this amount. I konw at times I experiance achy flu symptoms form this as a side effect only when I have been sitting around during the day it seems. Once I get up and moving it goes away. Make sure you read the side effects on the reader that comes with your prescription.

Initial dose (1 month)
2 Asacol 800mg HD tablet 2 x a day.


Maintanence dose (last 2 months) Just refilled for 3 month
1 Asacol 800mg HD tablet 2 x a day.

I take 6 x 800 a day. Gave up the death drugs (Imuran, Pred, etc) and switched to 6 x 800 Asacol as welll as other proven anti inflams such as Krill Oil and UltraInflamX360 (Metagenics). While I do have the occasional blood in the stool (minor amount) I feel 100% fine, training for a marathon and have regular bowel movements (of course there is the odd bad day). My C-Reactive protein levels have droppped dramatically since I switched.

In my opinion, as well as my Doctor's, Imuran, Prednisone and all the other biologics etc are to be avoided at all costs and has worked for me luckily.

wow, it never ceases to amaze me whats posted here.
I'm on imuran, I guess my demise is right around the corner?
