Is this medication also in Canada?...Is it worth a try for crohns..

My GI doc told me last week that he thought that this drug was going to be effective.  He asked if i wanted to try it, but my colazal seems to be working for the most part, so i was kinda hesitant.

Apriso is extended release Mesalamine. It's the same drug as in Asacol but you only have to take it once or twice a day. Essentially, it's the same thing as Lialda only from a different manufacturer. If Mesalamine works for you, this should give you a more convenient way to take it.

The drug is the same but the delivery mechanism of the two are different. I sat in my GI office with the Apriso rep a couple of months ago and got to see the pill, the insides, the little beads, and learn all about it.

I think Apriso starts dissolving at a pH of 6, whereas the other mesalamines start dissolving at a ph of 7. There is some evidence that shows people with UC tend to have a lower colon pH than people w/o UC, so there is a chance that Apriso will work better.

I was thinking about switching to Lialda, as it can also just be taken once a day, but maybe Apriso would be a better bet.

Apriso contains Aspartame. It is designed to start dissolving in the terminal ileum-- so, for those of us with left-sided UC who get relief from Colazal, we're likely better off sticking with it because it breaks down farther into the colon. Also, we can vary the Colazal capsule dosage if we need to. I think Apriso has been rushed to market to reap more profits for Salix & to compete with Shire (Lialda). / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I made switch from colazal to apriso a few weeks ago and am starting to get a little worse. apriso is once a day (for me) as opposed to 9 pills three times a day with colazal. I'll give it a little more time to see if my body adjusts... That's my story.

Apriso did not work for me, I was switched from Asacol HD to Apriso because he said it was a lesser dose and since I was almost symptom free that I would benefit more from Apriso. That was not the case and it sent me into a minor flare in the beginning of March and I am still not over it.

With these newer "super strength" mesalamine drugs, it's almost impossible to lower the dose when youre feeling better, which minimizes side effects. Therefore, I'm probably sticking with Asacol, -I lower the Asacol from 12x a day down to 2x a day when in remission, which works great for me.

Hmm...you are taking 12x400mg asacol pills a day for a total of 4.8g

I take 6x800mg asacol pills a day for a total of 4.8g.

Isn't it better more convenient to take less pills?

How can you get down to 800mg per day on the high strength stuff? -you can't break them in half.

My doc wants me to take the 400, 12x daily morning, noon and evening. He seems to think it covers it more throughout the day and really makes a difference. I guess if that was true, I would not have had to go on remicade. Remicade seems to be the only thing that has put me into remission.

Imuran should be used before remicade IMO
