Yes it is an associated risk, in fact I have had 3 PVT's. Perieheral or superficial vein thrombosis.
As far as a link to DVT,pubmed is your friend. The ones I had were 1/4 inch or less sized clot, and boy they hurt, cause a lot of swelling and redness. The first one I had went to the ER and they thought I had cellulitis in my leg, turns out it was a clot. Mine were all in the legs which is not dangerous, but you can get them in your head,or other spots which are dangerous.
