Dental fillings- Could this be the causeof some of our problems?

Take a look at this interesting Wiki article on the Dental amalgam controversy. Here is just an excerpt of a health concern of this per Wkipedia.

 

"The concern centers on the health effects of toxicity or allergy which may be associated with constant mercury exposure, particularly as an alleged cause of chronic illnesses, autoimmune disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, birth defects, oral lesions, and mental disorders.[citation needed] Scientists agree that dental amalgam fillings leach mercury into the mouth, but studies vary widely in the amount and whether such amount presents significant health risks. Estimations run from 1-3  micrograms (µg) per day (FDA) up to 27 µg/day (Patterson).[1][2] The effects of that amount of exposure is also disputed,[3][4] and currently dental amalgam is approved for use in most countries, although Norway, Denmark and Sweden are notable exceptions.[5]"

 

 

Read up and if you dont want to read it all scroll to the Health effects section below at the very leaast. It is amazing how many things they figure these fillings we have in our mouths could be causing. I really want the group to take a look at this in case it has not been put through here for opinion yet.

Had all mine removed in 2000 no difference in UC,still have,it.
My son has a j-pouch and he just had all his removed, and he is doing mercury chelation,claims he feels somewhat
better,not that he was having lots of problems.'
His best solution to date for gut problems was to cut out most meat.

weak teeth - mouth full of them since I was young, but only got UC at age 43.

Interesting to see what the crowd response is.

This has been discussed here many yrs ago...some people even had their fillings changed and still found no benefits (myself included)...could be related to the trigger part of IBD, but even after removal of mercury fillings, the disease set possibly in motion from them sadly continues to flare...changing them doesn't seem to reverse the disease/cure it.

i definitely wish i knew how bad mercury fillings were back when i got them. i have 12 fillings and they are all mercury! if i could afford to remove them and get them replaced, i would. it would be cool if some of my symptoms magically went away.

i know a lady who had hers removed and her chronic back pain went away in a day. she had been using painkillers daily for over 15 years and was shocked that doing something like that cured her.

I had perfect teeth and no fillings until I was diagnosed with UC. The pred stripped my teeth of calcium and now I have three fillings and two root canals.

So for me, UC caused my fillings rather than the other way around!

My brother is a dentist and says the mercury scare is a crock.

What the hxll they were doing using mercury in fillings is beyond me. I doubt it is very important of a player at all re. IBD- improvements may well be placebo effect given that its a dramatic procedure to get them removed- but still, just seems amazing that these knuckleheads woukd have ever thoughy mercury is something to be lodged into someones body.

If one gets them removed, isnt there an issue of mercury leaching even more during the removal? Or do natural dentists take precautions that prevent that?

I have only ever had one cavity, and it developed after I already had UC. So no, absolutely no correlation with me.

I have a lot of cavities and fillings. I did have a lot of my metal filling replaced recently but not because I was worried about health implications, mostly becuse I was sick of seeing the metal when I open my mouth. I would like to get rid of all of the metal but it's not chea to do so...

i got only one filling and that's WHITE!!! So no mercury there!

Most of the claims of health effects of mercury are overblown and lack evidence IMHO. I got UC in 2009. I had not seen a dentist since 1984. I do have quit a few mercury fillings.Most I got in the 1960s and 70s. I am pretty convinced that very little leeches out of a 40 year old filling. Removing them does result in high level of mercury. I went to the dentist finally after 25 plus year and needed two cavities. I chose silver(mercury) because of the durability. Mercury is bad but they really do last. The best alternative( gold) is incredibly expense and few dentists use it. The Wikipedia articles about dentistry are quite interesting.

I have a friend that had RA and a bunch of other autoimmune problems. She had her filling removed and a ton of other very expensive things like a total environmental remodeling of the house. This was recommended by a practicer that is obsessed with mercury and other stuff. Turned out she had undiagnosed Lyme disease. She has no problems now. Made me very cautious of blame mercury folks. I think removal of current filings is a blantant scam. I could go either way on new filings. My current dentist is much more concerned about antibotic use with UC patients and still recommends use mercury filings. The mercury level is much lower now.

I really think the trigger is a pathogen of some sort for UC. I also think stress is involved.

Natural or added floride is another subject. I was puzzled as to why I had so many cavities when I was younger and how I got away with going from 24 to 51 years old with exactly two cavities with out a single dentist visit. Both were repairs. Well I found out that I was drinking unfloradated drinking water in an area with no natural floride from age 4 until age 25. From 25 on, I drank well water in areas with very high natural floride levels.

Another queston might be,how many have had root canals.
I have got 5 now I think, and I really take care of my teeth and gums good.
I did have one prior to UC,which is now about 40 years old,and might be going bad.
Who knows,the dentist claim they are no problem,but.

the mercury issue in fillings is real, although maybe not as serious as some say. There is too much anecdotal evidence of people's health improving after having them removed to dismiss them. I know three people personally who vastly improved after their mercury fillings were replaced.

I had a few fillings when I was younger (the grey ones). But in baby teeth, and now I have white ones. And I need more but we don't have insurance. X( But I don't think it has anything to do with my UC. Ever since I was born I've had a weird immune system, in my opinion.

@Old Mike- re. Root canals- I've had one, which eventually failed and required the tooth to be removed and replaved with an implant. Serves as a reminder to me to keep flossing 2-3x a week. i'm thinking maybe a diluted hydrogen peroxide swish is a good idea weekly too. My most vicious flare since the initial UC attack was triggered by antibiotics that I was forced to take due to the implant surgery.

I have had one root canal prior to developing UC. It was about a year before. I haven't had any problelms with that tooth since. I also have another tooth that my dentist says needs a root canal but I am not in a rush to go through that again unless there is good reason. I've been avoiding it as long as I possibly can.

I had one root canal some years before developing any UC symptoms... and then had a second root canal done on that same tooth (because apparently it wasn't done correctly the first time) 8 years later right around the same time I was being diagnosed with UC.
