Asacol vs Canasa. Allergic to one, but not the other?

I had a colonoscopy today and it showed mild proctitis. I was relieved it wasnt that bad and localized to one area. The doctor prescribed Canasa suppositories before we up the Remicade dose. I had a bad reaction to Asacol years ago, almost instantly. Fever, vomit, D...etc. Doc said that canasa was probably ok since it is a suppository and doesn't have to process through my system...

Has anyone reacted this way to Asacol and been able to take Canasa suppositories?

Kind of nervous to try. :/

My friend can take Canasa and even Apriso but had a bad reaction to Asacol and Rowasa.

I guess you never know till you try but that is exactly what my GI said and I was violently ill by the 2nd suppository. Fever, nausea, headache and could barely move off the bed. Just be careful if you decide to try it. I will never go near mesalmine again. Canasa was probably my worst reaction and I tried them all except Apriso.

You could do cortisone supositories or foam maybe

I did hydrocortisone suppositories for a week and they didn't do anything. :(

Seems so strange he would offer something that he knows I'm allergic to. Still don't know if I'm going to do it tonight....

There is a possibility that you're allergic to a secondary ingredient in the med rather than to mesalamine itself. Can you tolerate aspirin? That gives a clue as to whether mesalamine is your problem because chemically it's a high-powered form of salicylic acid. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Yes, have been using salofalk supp. for years without any problems,but had horrible reaction to Asacol , Mezavant and even enemas but fine with the supps.

Canasa is basically the same thing as a salofalk suppository. They're both mesalamine-based, just like Asacol and mesalamine enemas. Must be a dose thing if you can tolerate suppositories but not enemas.

I am allergic to Canasa (get a rash) but I can take Lialda and Rowasa. Weird..guess it is a secondary ingrediant.

Not sure how well I tolerate aspirin. I have had flares from taking ibuprofen, so I have always stayed away from all NSAIDs.

I talked to the pharmacist today. He said that my "allergic reaction" were only "side effects" from the Asacol. He said that unless you have an anaphylactic reaction or rash, you are not considered allergic. But my body rejected the Asacol pretty quickly. Interesting...

He suggested I try it out. I guess will start tonight. Wish me luck. :/
