I need Mesalazine granule

This is the second time my doctor would prescribe me capsules. I told him that I cannot swallow it. I need granules. Which one can I ask for? Which brand name are available in the US? Thanks.

If you want a medication to treat your colon I don't think you can take granules - they will be absorbed well before they get to your colon. Are you unable to take any pill at all?

In Germany there is Salofalk Granustix. So yes it's possible. And I know there is brands out there I just forgot their name. And no I can't swallow big pills. I always crush mine.

Wow I thought I was the only adult in the world that doesn't swallow pills. lol! I've always had a fear of it. I crush everything I've ever had to take. Lucky for me,up until getting all of these GI issues, I never really needed to take any medications. So far with this, I've only needed rectal meds. Wondering what I'll do when the time comes and I need pills.

I don't think "crushing" pills is a good idea, especially the pill types for UC that are coated so that they are released in a certain part of the intestine where your inflammation is. You are defeating the purpose. The coating is "enteric" and designed so that specific acids in certain places in the gut dissolve the coating and release the medicine. Tell your doctor if you have real problems swallowing pills and let her/him Rx you the right meds.

Glad someone pointed you to coated granules so hope you can get them.

Yes everyone can use enemas at the same time as oral pills, it's a great idea to treat the whole gut/colon.

My doctor prescribed me Apriso and the nurse told me that they are capsules but you can open them and inside are granules (I will post the exact name here when I get them). I specifically asked if I can just open them and swallow the granules and she said yes. If that really works like that, I'd be so happy and relieved :-) Thank you all so much for your support it's greatly appreciated.

Yes I can confirm PENTASA PROLONGED RELEASE GRANULES. are easy to take and available in most parts of Europe that I have been.

I have used them but find the one I am on now work better for me, they are Claversol they are quite smooth and shaped so that they slide down ever so easily

in australia they are called mesalasine granules. and yes, they are enteric coated and go all the way to the colon. sometimes i would poop them out. they look like the round sprinkles on donuts! and they taste sweet too.
best way to take them is to pour them on your tongue and wash down with liquid. do not put in the liquid first. doesn't work. they stick to the glass after you empty it. whoever wrote the directions clearly never tried taking them!!!

I take mesalamine granules called MESAGRAN. Each sachet comes with 1g of mesalamine. These, like kazygal posted, also taste sweet as they have vanilla flavoring.

Kazbern, can you please tell me why you think the granules are absorbed before they make it into the colon?

I was taking Salofalk (mesalamine) pills for a while and they got me into remission at 4g p/day. Then, my doc put me on mesalamine granules saying they'd be better suited to get me into remission than the pills, but I haven't managed to reach remission yet and it's been a while of consistent use. The pills got me there in about a week or two. Thing is, the granules are so much easier and more convenient to take than the pills so even I was hoping the granules would work.

As promised here is the name of the granules I picked up today. And yes they are the same ones I'm used to from Germany.

Apriso 0.375g extended-release capsules

I'm so relieved.
