Went to a Prevent Colon Cancer 5K -- selling hot dogs and cake afterward...

Kinda goes against their main goal of preventing colon cancer, doncha think? Oh. Right. Diet plays absolutely no role in Americans being fat, sick, and disease and cancer-ridden. It made me want to take my $20 away from the stupid nonprofit who put on the event. They didn't even hand out any literature or talk to participants about how or when to get screened!!!

I can imagine talking about the screening, the scopes, the colonoscopies while having a chewed hot dog ahahah!
And how about that lovely jam cake? if you see blood in your bms....

Yeah doesnt make sense but I kind of understand why they are doing that. Because they arent going to sell and make money out of a tofu or pearl barley stew.

Sounds odd, is odd but bringing the money is probbly what count on the end.

Agree. There seems to be a real disconnect between diet and health conditions like this, even amongst professionals who should realize the food they're offering at an event opposes what's in the patient's best interests. I can't recall specifics but my husband mentioned an IBS awareness event recently and the food they offered was Italian, some pasta dish with onions, peppers and sausage. We both joked, yeah I'd go to that event and not eat, just what I do anyway.

A very good percentage of the population never sees the correlation between food/diet and bowel disorders.

Which reminds me of my first week home post-op, major resection, etc. all of our neighbors brought delicious meals for my family each night. Each one was Italian in nature but one, I think people just naturally think of casseroles and Italian ones come to mind. Each meal my husband would shake his head at, even our kids turned their noses up at them. But the gesture was just so incredibly nice. The one that I could eat was a whole roasted chicken, mashed potatoes from scratch and some sort of fresh vegetable. That neighbor's mother had life long colitis. She said later, she knew I needed bland and plain food.

There was a time in my life that food never played such a part in my decision making - what to eat, how much to eat, when to eat it and sometimes, skipping meals. Sigh.....

Well, we're all in the same boat to an extent - none of us can what we want and then not suffer repercussions from it.

you know, i was just reading about how paula deen sponsored this 1 mile diabetes walk. they had stations with butter garlic biscuits "just in case you get the butter tingles!" paula's words, not mine haha i just thought how ridiculous that was.

Eating a hot dog every now and then isn't going to hurt anyone. Eating them everyday 3x a day, well then that may be an issue. Everything in moderation. It's a pretty simple rule that actually works. Just saying.

stefanie -- I know, I thought of the money thing too, but still...

Marianne -- That's not the point. This is an event with the goal of preventing colon cancer. I think there are actually studies out there showing hot dogs CAUSE cancer.

Sara, when I went to the CCFA they were BBQing a lot of greasy foods. I didn't "get" it either but it's still nice to participate in these events. Hopefully the money goes to a good cause and not to paying the salaries of the people managing the paperwork.

The money goes to the organization running the event. Their organization's mission is to educate people about preventing colon cancer....so yeah, they aren't doing a good job.

Sorry but I have a hard time believing that eating the occasional hot dog causes cancer. And anyway, what DOESN'T cause cancer these days?! It's just getting ridiculous.

CCFC and M&M Meat's team up every year to raise awareness and donations for crohn's and colitis while serving hot dogs, french fries, chips, burgers, sausages and pop. All on the grill. And they encourage sufferers to come out and support them by doing it.

Ha , I was at a store just yesterday where M &M's had an event . I asked one of the guys if the hamburgers were wheat free. Answer was no of course. I asked about the hot dogs, so we looked at the ingredients and they were wheat free, so I said OK, I'll take one. No bun please. He looked at me and said well, where am I going to put it! (Dangerous question;-/ ) I told him the same paper pouch he put the hot dog/bun in was fine. I did point out that most people with Crohn's /Colitis can't eat that stuff. He just looked at me shocked

I think the odd hot dog is going to be fine especially if you can find European style. They aren't all made out of crappy ingredients.

My Mom just died from colon cancer and I was her caregiver. She was at one if the largest cancer research hospitals in the US - MD Anderson in Houston. Their cafes, restaurants, coffee shops and gift shops all sold a variety of food/beverages including junk food.

Personally, I don't see much wrong with it for one event. I have hotdogs, although not often.
What I found more weird is the Crohn's and Colitis foundation in Winnipeg had a fundraiser selling fruitcake. Hotdogs doesn't hold a candle to THAT in my opinion..lol.

I'm wondering what the options (for those who are horrified by the choice) would be other than hotdogs?

I went to a band camp and on the application they had a thing for special diet needs. So I filled it out. I did not get a special diet... instead I had to scavenge from what I could have in the freaking salad bar. Oh, but vegetarians got special dinners.

Not surprised to hear about this poor nutritional selection! (But I think the most harmful component in mass-produced hot dogs is nitrite. There are specialty labels now like Applegate that make hot dogs w/o chemical additives/preservatives.) A while back when my gastro started a local IBD support group, the medical center where it meets contributed a very unappetizing cold buffet. It included oily chicken chunks on skewers & little squares of crustless white bread. Even my gastro passed this stuff up & just took some applesauce from a common bowl, likely the safest food there. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I have two things to add--

I live just outside of Chicago and have seen the 'Hot Dogs cause Butt Cancer' billboard on the highway..interestingly, my husband says its doesn't phase him anymore as he drives by it everyday.

Another thing, I have been pondering this food issue at events for those with IBD as I am on the planning committee of the Take Steps walk in Chicago and I am going to work my hardest to have good food that even I (on my strict Paleo diet) can eat like fruits and veggies, though I am going to beg a pizza place so others who aren't bothered by diary or wheat can partake. It is something I notice for sure though, recently I was at a CCFA patient conference and the majority of the snacks offered were pastries..it was even funnier to look at all that after a nutritionist talked..the little bit of fruit there was disappeared really fast!

A related theme recounted in this video of Dr Andreas Eenfeldt speaking at the Ancestral Health Symposium last year (long video but really interesting if you have the time to watch it all):

In it he mentions attending the International Congress of Obesity where the lunch they laid on for delegates comprised a sandwich, a sweetened yoghurt, an apple and a candy bar (see the details - and the results on his blood sugar - at 29:28 on the video). Carbs, carbs, and more carbs thus sugar, sugar, sugar.

I do commend this video to you - it's a real eye opener.

Actual REAL FOOD, like, say, oh I don't know, FRUIT or VEGETABLES!!! Have people forgotten what actual food is? Or if you need some fried/grilled item how about a veggie burger or tofu/tempeh sandwich?


Why anyone would ever want to willingly put a hot dog into their mouth is beside me.
