About to be fired and need help

Hi I have ulcerative colitis diagnosed many years ago. I am taking sulfasalazine every day since, but now is geting much worse. I am a bus driver and my company dont belive me, they are about to fire me becouse I cant come to work again. what I suppose to do.

Welcome to Healingwell! Have you tried any other medications? Perhaps if you give us a little bit more history we might be able to help you better.

Your dr can get you on FMLA. It protects you from losing your job for missing work due to illness.

As Kloe stated, you can go on FMLA. You will need to get the forms and have your doctor fill them out. Once filled out, the forms are then submitted to your insurance company.

Im sure you can go to a center that could advice you as well. For sure you can find some tools work wise. You got to go to the doctor to get a note. You have to have a note that states your condition. Either way it's not easy for your employer to believe you.

Its same in Canada if your doctor writes you a note stating of your incapacity to work they cannot sack you. Well they can always do but it can go against them and you will be able to ask for compensation. Had one of my work sacking me in the past saying to me: I was to sick to be productive. But had doctors note putting me off work for 14 days but they ignored it and it cost them 3 month of full salary.

Now if you are a bus driver the nature of your work make it hard or impossible to stop in the middle of your journey to go to the toilets.

So you need a doctors note, you need adequate medication for you and time to heal to be able to drive. But I couldnt imagine myself being a bus drive with colitis. I would consider doing other things.

Speak to your union ireknyc. You cannot be fired for reasons of ill health and your union will support you in this. Also get your GP involved as they can provide a letter for your employer which explains your condition. If you cannot continue to drive buses - and I wonder how you can given the lack of toilet facilities - then they should find you an alternative role based in a depot or whatever.

I agree with London gal: one thing is for you not to get fired, which I imagine would be against the law, and another is to be realistic about your situation: you cannot drive a bus while flaring. Perhaps you can be reassigned to a desk job?

I would come up with a list of other abilities you have, and approach your boss with suggestions of other positions you could be assigned to.

I'm in the UK. I tried to drag an email from my HR department out, but I can't find it.

Anyway, we come under the disability discrimination act. as long as you have doctors notes and have been honest with your employers, they can't fire you and have to make special considerations.

I had a whole year without a flare and was diagnosed in 2010, now i've had a few days off here and there recently. I have to fill out annoyingly long forms, but its all to keep it covered.  When I was first diagnosed I had 6 weeks off and couldnt explain why to start with, luckily my company has a nurse who explained to my managers what a cronic illness is and now my managers know when I say "illness related" not to really ask much more

Also go to the citizens advice beuro, that's why they exist.

If its getting worse, go see the GP again and see your specialist ASAP. Usually if I call the hospital they can get me an appointment within a few weeks and once the next day when it was urgent.
