firm-to-loose stools during a bowel movement (?)

Hi guys,

I am new here, so please let me introduce myself. I am 22 years old; currently a senior in college. I was diagnosed with UC via colonoscopy earlier this year.
I was put on prednisone and lialda. I've tapered off the Prednisone and am now taking 2400 mg mesalamine (lialda) each day.

Recently I've noticed 2 things going on. (1) My stools are getting looser with each BM. In the mornings, my BM would be completely fine and normal. Throughout the day, I would go a few more times, but with each successive time, my stools would more and more watery! By the end of the day, it is completely diarrhea! (2) Even during a single bowel movement, i notice this trend. The first half of my BM would fine (solid) and the second half would be loose and watery.

In fact, this was precisely why I went to see my doctor in the first place 4 months ago. What is going on? I'll be visiting my doctor later this week.

Has this happened to anyone else here??!?!

That was pretty common for me... I figure the solid front part had been "in line" longer so more time for water to be absorbed and firm it up.

I have exactly the same issue. My stool starts out relatively solid and formed (I even had to strain to pass it early in the week - oh the excitment), but then by the end of the movement it is in small soft lumps. I also tend to have a much bigger volume of stool indicating that it is not compacted as much.

What is confusing me though is the suggestion that it might be due to inflammation. My colonoscopy last year showed my inflammation was restricted to my rectum and sigmoid. Since then I have been on oral and rectal pentasa - is it possibel that my inflammation has now moved higher up? giving me the soft stool at the end of a movment? I should also say that at the moment I am generally only going once or twice a day (although my GI doc seems convinced I am on the cusp of a big flare up).

My problem and solution.

Hello everybody for the past year I had loose stool after a bowel movement. Whenever I went to the bathroom I would have a normal stool with no blood, no pain in the stomach and everything was normal , the only thing was that I had to wipe so much to get it cleaned, the real problem was when after taking a bowel movement and cleaning then after an hour I would go for a walk and after walking 10 minutes It would get real itchy and greasy and I would have to go to the bathroom and wipe again and sometime there would be blood in it also . I don't get it. Isabgol and metamucil are petty much the same thing.

"Sometimes it just goes back and forth during a BM. What does this mean?" It means you have ulcerative colitis wit active inflammation. It's notoriously inconsistent. We can start a bm solid and end it diarrhea or vice versa. As you heal, things get more and more consistent.
