I have been for a review with my gastroenterologist tonight. He had prescribed 2 x Asacol 400mg three times a day but this has had little or no effect on me, either because I am just not responding to this dose or because I appear to excrete most of the capsules completely intact. I asked why he had not put me on 2 x 800mg three times a day which I had heard was the dosage to try and bring the condition under some form of control and he told me that he didn't want to kick off with the higher dose as I am (relatively mildly) allergic to aspirin and he needed to check for any negative response. He was going to increase my Asacol until I told him about
it not breaking down so instead he has prescribed Pentasa granules 2g twice a day with a review in two weeks' time. If I am not showing any sign of improvement he wants to consider a move to steroids which I am very worried about
and wish to avoid if at all possible. I told him my concerns about
the side effects of steroids and he said that what I described were common reactions to first generation steroids but that the new generation was much more targeted, had a short blast type treatment (one month then immediate withdrawal) and would not carry the weight gain/moon face/acne etc. etc. associated with long term steroid use. The medication in question is called Clipper and the chemical base is beclomethasone dipropionate. Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm sure a lot of you do and I would really appreciate some feedback on its effectiveness and its side effects
