What times do you take your Colozol?

I asked the Dr if I could try this instead of the Lialda.  I am used to taking pills only 1X/day.  What times do you take it and do you use an alarm reminder or anything?  I am hoping that w/ this new med...I can taper the rectals-even if only a little (I currently do one every night for prob over a year now)

So what do you do?  Also have a colonoscopy in a few weeks...will post result.

     I was on Colazal for ten years.  My dose was 3 pills 3x a day.  I took them after each meal.

Did you split them up every 8 hours..how exact is this? Thanks.

It doesn't have to be exact. I've been on Colazal for quite some time and I don't need a reminder now. But before I would put them in a pill box and leave the box out so I would see it every time I went into the kitchen. I take mine at 8am, 2pm and 10pm - mainly because it's just easier for me to remember those times.

Red_34 - I noticed your sig says unable to tolerate all mesalamines yet you are taking Colazal?  Isn't Colazal a 5ASA?  I am just wondering because I would like to find (if they exist) an anti-inflammatory that isn't 5ASA.  I don't think I tolerate the pills very well but seem to tolerate the enemas.

When I took Asacol, I timed the doses to be ~8 hours apart but I don't think it makes a big difference if things are exact. If you have trouble remembering to take your meds during the day, I do suggest setting an alarm. I had my phone do a silent, vibrating alarm at 7:30 AM, 3:30 PM, and 10:30 PM. I usually heard/felt the alarm right away but, if I didn't, it would still show up on my phone when I looked at it later, at which time I would take my dose.

I split mine up pretty evenly - around 7am, 3pm and 11pm.  I've been taking it I think since it came out - anyway I used to not split it up so evenly during the day but decided to try it to see if it made a difference a few years ago.  Not sure if it did, but it didn't hurt.

I've been on Colazal for 8 years. I take 2 pills after each meal. I try to space them at least 5-6 hrs apart.

Fndcureforuc, I can't tolerate mesalamines but Colazal is a basalazide and I do okay on it. They are both 5-ASA's.

Colazal (generic name is balsalazide disodium) breaks down to mesalamine by bacterial action within the colon. RE dose scheduling: I take 3 capsules with a meal & try to fit them in between 8 AM-9:30 PM. At home I always take them out of the container & put them right beside my plate before bringing any food to the table. Keeping them in sight during the meal reminds me to swallow them when I'm nearly finished eating but still have enough water left on the table to wash them down! They made a huge improvement in my quality of life with UC so I consider them daily Priority #1 and keep the 280-bottle on my dining table 24/7. It's my security blanket ... / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
