Girly Girl...there's absolutely no reason for invasive exploratory for diagnosis before an MRCP unless a patient is already in obvious distress of probable blockage.
ERCP can cause pancreatitis and trigger early slow developing PSC into an active state.
Liver biopsy can cause serious side effects as well, and the diagnostic quality of it or the ERCP aren't any more positive than the MRCP.

Quincy, I thought that to make a positive PSC diagnosis you have to have a liver biopsy or ERCP to see the bile ducts??? I was only 13 when I was diagnosed so I don't remember all of the reasons why anymore. And wouldn't you want a biopsy or something to see possible cirrhosis?
I have never had an MRCP so I am not familiar with it--I just knew that it was some kind of dye involved test. I am guessing you do further testing if the MRCP, liver ultrasound don't show good results. When I was diagnosed the first symptom I had was turning yellow and itching. Then I was hospitalized and everything happened right together. One day I was having a liver biopsy, the next an ERCP.
Good luck!
