pancreatitis caused by what

So im in the hospital since sat and they finally gave me a reason for the pain. Pancreatitis. boooooooooooooooo!!!
I previously posted that the pain was hiding from the doctors but last night it came back with a vengence. by far the worst pain ive had in my life and a 10 in my pain score. took me 5 hrs to convince the nurse to get me pain relief and she eventually got a doctor to see me. she prescribed tramadol. it took a further hour and a half for them to kick in and i finally got some sleep.

Had the GI in this morning and she siad to go of the mezevent as it could be the cause and to fast to give it a chance to rest.

for those of you who experienced the same,

Q how long will i need to fast.

Q what treatment is there apart from fasting and going of meds. will it just not come back once i restart eating and will that be me of 5asa's altogether.

!1 doctor told me that it usually settles on its own, but ive had it on and of for the past 3 months. what does that mean. it wasnt an isolated attack.

I just got out of hospital after suffering from Acute Pancreatitis. The cause for me was Azathioprine. At the time i went in I was taking mezavant and Azathioprine. I was taken off both of them in the end and put on colazide instead.

I had to fast for 2 days then resume eating a light, low fat diet. I had a little bit of discomfort after i ate the next few days but after that it has pretty much come good. I am still only eating small meals and I was told if there was a return of that intense pain i arrived with then i would have to stop eating again.

I think the length of fasting depends on the severity of the pancreatitis though. From what i read, i think between 2-5 days is normal?

My dr pretty much told me i can never have azathioprine again so i would say you wont be able to have that medication again unless there is some other cause like gallstones.

Other people might be more help with your last Q, i think in my case as it all happened in the span of a few weeks i shouldn't have any further problems now i am off that medication. However i think i read (yep, i read too much especially in hosp with nothing else to do) that acute pancreatitis can turn into chronic pancreatitis if the pancreas suffers too much damage.

Hi, my daughter got pancreatitis from her 6-mp. They did all the test to rule out anything else also. They figured it was from her medicine. They took her off the 6-mp and never had any problems with pancreatitis again.

oh crap! hope they find out what's going on exactly! There are different causes for pancreatitis it seems, but I hope they do an MRI/CT as well.

Hope the pain meds keep you pain-free for extended periods of time!....

I developed pancreatitis from taking 6-mp. I was in hospital for 4 days on IV fluids only. Stopping the 6-mp made my numbers drop immediately. Day 4 I ate jello soup and a popsicle and tolerated it well and was sent home. It never came back so we are sure it was the medication. I started Remicade shortly after and had great results almost immediately with minimal side effects. It put me into complete remission for 3 years.

sorry for bringing this thread forward but the pain is back again.
Im of all meds except predsol so im clueless as to what it is.
Im also clueless as to what to do next.
I just spent 5 nights in hospital so i dont want to go back.
They gave me blood packs to get done if the pain came back and i have an app in 3 weeks.
Looks like ill just have to manage the pain until then.
the Doc said that i was getting tested for a load of weird and wonderfull things b4 i left.
Clinically its mild. my amylase levels only went up to 440. normal is 60-90 and a severe attack is 1000+.
But the pain is not mild no way.
Feeling a bit crappy. thought it was sortred.

Hi Q,
blood packs, dunno the real name for them. it basically the pack you take to the lab with blood samples in it for testing my amylase levels. the will have my name and details on it and what to test for. i have to get my blood tested when i have an episode.

Predsol is a steroid suppository shaped like a bullet. i prefer the foam. easier to use.

yeah wonderful for her but not for me.

According to my GI, she advised me that a severe flare can make someone more predisposed to duodenitis and pancreatitis so maybe that is something you could look into.

My pain came back last night too- after eating, although it feels slightly more to the right than it was before. I was doing a bit of a panic because i don't want to go back to hospital either. Called the dr today but they are too busy seeing as i am not in pain right this particular minute - i swear i can never get an appointment when i need it. Hoping i just ate too much or something but i didn't think it would come back like this now i am off the azathioprine. Got Dr appt for tomorrow, but prob won't bother seeing as i see the Gastroenterologist the day after that. Cross fingers my pain doesn't return today. Has anyone else had this same thing??? Bit worried.
