Quincy,
My diet isn't what it should be I admit. I stay away from very obvious things that upset what would have irritated IBS, so no salad dressings (they KILL me!), sauces like tomato sauce, although pizza sauce doesn't seem to bother me (maybe because it's more thoroughly cooked?) I have never really limited dairy because it doesn't bother me (except the yogurt thing...). In fact, there are some days when a glass of milk is the only thing that seems to quell reflux symptoms... like putting out a fire, I can feel it all the way down, and then burp!
No caffeine, no "bubbles" (soda, and soda water products are out... too much gas!). Limited chocolate... doesn't bother me, but I only have a little high cocoa dark chocolate every so often; trying to see if it will really help the bad cholesterol.
The problem is, the things that aren't good for you like soft starchy things, potatoes, pasta (no sauce or margarine), bread that seem to stop the diarrhea are exactly the wrong things for every other part of my life--I need to lose weight, so I tried things that are healthier for you, more fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc. and then the UC acts up--more gas, diarrhea, bloating, etc.
I have one doctor a GI saying eat these things that are easier on your digestion, and a primary saying lose weight, eat these other things; so, I'm looking for a nutritionist who has experience in dealing with UC sufferers who still need to lose weight to see what happy middle ground can be found...
I know it's a balancing act... just have to find the right tight rope!
