uc and pain meds who else takes them besides me?

I notice after browsing the site regularly that not many of the uc posters mention taking pain medications in the signature lines. I am just wondering because I do and have chronic pain. I know that we all have our own part of this disease with different kinds of side effects for instance some of us have joint problems or arthritis but I take my pain meds for my spinal pain but I have constant leftover gut and rectal pain. just wondering if thats just me. I have it all the time not just when I am flaring. my doctor says its from bowel thickening and years of damage that cause the spasms and rectal and leftsided pain. does anyone else struggle with this when not flaring up?

I am taking norco that 10mg hydrocodone with 325 acetaminiphin 12 pills a day. I am going to do the switch back to 15mg oxycodone but I wasn't liking the way I felt taking it. kind of still hurting but dizzy. the norco is not working anymore. maybe I will see about the dilaudid, my doctor really wanted me to switch to a patch of fetnyal I am not sure of the spelling but that felt more like I would be out of control of the dosage than with pills. do the dilaudid work well for the abdo pain for you? I was thinking about some of the folks with uc have liver involvement maybe thats why they are hesitant with certain patients or maybe they are just nervous like some doctors are. Blessed not to have liver involved in this

     I suffered a terrible bout of UP (proctitis) along with extremely high, uncontrollable BP due to prednisone use back in May of 2008 and had to be hospitalized.  The pain I experienced began in the rectum and traveled down the inside of both legs to the knees.  It was horrendous and I am pretty good at tolerating pain.  My GI doctor never gave me a pain pill during the entire ten days I spent in the hospital.  However, when I returned home, my family doctor told me I should NOT have to suffer so and prescribed hydrocodone to take every 6 hours.  I am not a big advocate of pain pills, but he told me to make sure to take them every six hours and NOT to wait until the pain became almost unbearable.  Before I started taking them, I can remember walking the floors of my home trying to get relief. 

     I had surgery in 2010.  The rectum was badly diseased.  To tell you the truth, I had more pain from that diseased rectum than I had post surgery.  Glad to be rid of it!

I myself was prescribed the oxycodone hcl 5 mg which worked for a while but my dr has since retired and my new one isn’t fond of pain meds and just tells me to meditate and try not to think about it so I’m back to square one of screaming crying in the fetal position or alomost getting into accidents bc the pain is so bad. But he tells me the inflammation is the cause and he wants to focus on that. Is there anything I can do? I’m literally in pain in my belly and rectum everyday to the point I don’t even get out of bed unless I have too. He tells me to go to er if I need pain meds. So I’m supposed to go ever other day?! Someone have any advice on what to do?

It sounds like the underlying flare needs treatment, and then maybe lower/safer meds like occasional Tylenol-III

But daily pain meds is a risky thing

This has been kicked around in the crohns forum over the years. In all my years being with my gi dr he does not rx pain medication to his patients. If a patient is bad enough he will refer them to a pain mgt dr.. Because of the opioid crisis, GP's will rarely, rarely rx them any longer. ER is a huge gamble, most of the time they tell patients up front we do not give pain meds.

I was told by my GI doc yesterday that I can NEVER take NSAIDs again and that I should contact my primary care doc to see what I can take. Her answer was "Unfortunately there is not anything much over the counter other than acetaminophen to take. So I would recommend trying that and if it is not helping whatever pain you are having, then come in and see us. You can always try heat, ice and then creams like icy hot or even lidocaine as well." I'm not talking about a prescription for an ongoing medicine, I just need something like Advil that I can take for everyday aches and pains.
