I'm in hospital and they want to do a flex sigmoid
I told them I refuse to get one done unless I'm put under

Has anyone had one done with out being put under?

I had one done when I was first diagnosed with uc and
They put me in a twilight but I still felt everything and was painful

They said they would put me under but I don't feel confident and think they will only put me in a twilight

I have, it's not bad, I just relaxed. They probably want a quick biopsy to check for c diff.

     The ONLY time I was put under for a flex sig was the last time I had it done, which was March of 2010.  My rectum was sooooo inflamed the doctor wouldn't attempt to do it in his office.

I just had one yesterday of my j pouch. No prep, no sedation...Didn't hurt at all.

Christine, I'm really inflamed as well hence why I'm in hospital now
But my Gi came and talk to me and basically told me to suck it up and there just gonna put under twilight.. jerks

I've never had a s-scope, but for my last c-scope I was given something (can't remember what), but I was still fully awake. It didn't hurt a bit.

I didn't have any sedation at all, not even twilight, for my flex scope. There was a moment of discomfort, lasted about 30 seconds, and I didn't feel a thing for the rest of it. BUT, and this is an important BUT, I had no inflammation at the time (or very little... GI's exact quote was "not bad at all!"). She did take a lot of tissue samples and while I felt them, they didn't hurt.

I have a high pain tolerance plus my butt has been poked and prodded so many times I have lost count! Nothing phases me anymore!

Hope it wasn't too bad for you. Obviously if you are inflamed it may hurt more.

I had to have them every 2 weeks or so when I was in the asacol study, no anesthesia at all. I was always inflamed back then, so it was not fun, very very uncomfortable but not so painful that I couldn't put up with it for a few minutes.
Anesthesia is risky! It really doesn't make sense for you or them to use it for a flex sig. Also, being awake you can tell the doc to hurry up! I always did! It usually was quick, they can tell pretty quickly what's going on if they are good.

I have to have a flex sigmoid tomorrow. I have had 8 colonoscopies but never a flex sig. I am franly very nervous because I also have to have an enema to prep for it and I have never had an enema and that is also freaking me out beyond belief. Even though I' have had UC for 14 years I never get used t anyone going near "down there" if you know what I mean. Also, my first ever colonoscopy I think they only put me into twilight and I felt everything and it was like I wanted to scream it hurt so bad but I couldn't scream so it was like the worst nightmare ever only it was real and I have hated doing this stuff ever since, it always freaks me out because of that first time

i've only had one flex sig and i was awake for it. it didn't hurt at all but i just had proctitis at the time, not UC.

if you don't feel comfortable doing it without sedation, just tell your doc you won't get it done.

      Bananagirl....proctitis is UC but only in the rectum.  I suffered with it for twelve years and it never traveled further into my colon.

       My stupid GI doctor knew I was inflamed when he scheduled the sig.  When I tried giving myself the Fleets...I thought someone stuck a blow torch up my butt shocked !!!  That is probably why he had to put me out and why he couldn't go further than 15 or 20 cm.

     Another time he tried giving me the sig in his office when I was inflamed and my BP soared to 216/110.  You never saw a doctor remove an apparatus so fast.  I think he believed I was gonna stroke out right then and there.  He had me sit there for 15 min and then sent me across the street to my family physician..oy.  What an ordeal.  Sooooo glad I don't have to deal with that anymore.

I had a flex sig done last year with no prep or sedation and he went all the way....into my terminal ileum. It's really not that bad.

Butte1, I have had the prep enema and it burnt my butt whole
And it caused some abdomen pain for me. But that's me though, not to sure if you will get the same reaction.

I'm so inflamed atm , so scared about the flex Sig

christine, i know. i just meant that it wasn't UC yet- like it hadn't traveled up my colon and i didn't have ulcers. it was just rectum inflammation. at the time, i wish my doctor had mentioned what UC was. he just said if i did enemas for 3 weeks, i'd be fine and shouldn't have any problems after that. boy how i wish that was true! he acted like this was a walk in the park and all he said was "eat more fiber" as my further instructions.

Hey there,

I had a flex sig to diagnose my UC. This was in October of last year, and I was 22 weeks pregnant at the time and they wouldn't sedate me or do a full colonoscopy. Even with being uncomfortably pregnant and suffering UC symptoms, it really was no problem. The enema is easy, and the flex sig is quick and relatively painless. At one point, I felt pain, said "ow-ow-ow" and they immediately backed off and the pain disappeared.

I've had 2 colonoscopies and another flex sig since them (last flex sig in March 2012). Really, it's virtually painless (at least it has been for me two out of two times). There is some "discomfort", but no pain. I couldn't feel the biopsies, either, even tho I could see it on the screen.

I definitely prefer a flex sig to a colonoscopy because then I can see on the screen what the doc is seeing, can ask questions in real time, can drive myself there and home, and don't have to do the awful, awful gallon-prep (the enema is pretty easy).
