Reassure me about my colonoscopy

I'm having colonoscopy #3 Friday (butt-procedure #5, I've had two flexible sigmoidoscopies too). I'd say no big deal, done this before, etc, except that now I can't stop thinking about my last sigmoidoscopy where I was supposed to be sedated but I was fully aware the whole time. I remember bad pain where I was yelling to stop, and after it was done I felt ready to get up and walk out without any recovery (and being annoyed at the guy loudly snoring because *I* didn't get to sleep through it).

The colonoscopies before that I was always totally out, woke up when it was finished. I want *that* again, but their web site says, "Most people get sleepy, drowsy, relaxed and forgetful, but you will not become unconscious. It is not unusual for you to experience mild, brief discomfort in the form of cramps or gas-type pains."

Someone tell me it's all gonna be okay! I'm scared!

Is this being done at the same place/by the same people who did the last one? Hopefully not. You should be able to tell them about your experience last time and your anxieties, and they should use a little more sedation on you. When I had my c-scopes, they put a bit of sedation into me and said if I needed more to let them know. I didn't, but it helped to know I could have more if I wanted.

No it's not the same place. I found a new doctor I'm happy with so far so I should be able to trust her but this will be the first time. The last ones were all at the same (old) place though, good and bad both. Maybe they don't use as much sedation for a sigmoidoscopy - that's what I keep telling myself.

I had a similar expeerience once as well. I make it a habit of informating the nurse, doctor and anesthesiologist at every procedure what happened, how I felt and to please help make sure it doesn't happen again. They are always respectful of my story and it has not happened since.

Sometimes the doctor an also put in some benedryl so they don't have to give as much versid and it creates the same "can't remember a thing" effect

I've had two. The prep far worse than the scopes. Whatever drug they gave me knock me out had me gone by the time I'd counted down to, I think, 45 from 50. They could have been player chess in my innards and I'd never have known it.

I have had all my flex sigmoidoscopies stone cold sober, first one at age fifteen, and those are no fun. All the colonoscopies though (various types of sedation for each), went great - no pain or real memory of it afterward. (Same goes for the upper endoscopy I had.) Even though you might not technically be "unconscious", if you have any sedation at all, you will most likely not feel or remember a thing.

My very fist one they used Demerol. Started with one shot, and as soon as the doc got in with the scope, she saw me wince and said, "Give her another shot of Demerol." After that I was high as a kite and feelin' NO pain, if you know what I mean! They could have done anything to me at that point and I would have taken it with a sleepy smile, LOL. I don't remember anything after that.

I'm sure you'll do fine. Just tell them about your concerns, and they'll take good care of you!
