Who has tried Entocort?

My son's GI wants to start him on Entocort 9mg daily, based on the biopsy from his colonoscopy last week. I am not so sure that I want to do this. The inflammation was "mild" and he was right in the middle of a flare up, so of course there will be inflammation. He has been on steroids in the past and they did nothing for his UC. Is entocort all that different? My son is almost out of this flare and he's back to eating and somewhat normal bm's, so I just don't see the need for this right now. Would appreciate any advice/feedback on this medication and the results you've experienced with it.

There are next to no side effects- Entocort is topical to the colon only. It is not a systemic steroid.
Its like rubbing cream only on a rash instead of taking a benedryl that is systemic.

Entocort is EXTREMELY expensive (about $1500) if you have no insurance or minimal drug coverage.

You can ask the doctor for samples for a week or so to see if he will get any benefit from it before you get the whole prescription.

It doesn't make sense to me to use entocort for UC unless there's inflammation on the right side, like cecum and terminal ileum. I doubt entocort is active much beyond that.

Is your son's GI talking perhaps about budesonide retention enemas?

kazbern: I don't think he's talking about enemas. The nurse just said 9mg Entocort.

Carlie: Thanks, I am going to pick up some samples tomorrow just in case we decide to use Entocort. I don't see much point in it if steroids have not helped him in the past. He is doing ok right now and I certainly don't want to mess that up.

I'm on oral Entocort (Budesonide) right now. I can't say whether it's helped, but I have been getting better, and it certainly hasn't hurt. Sorry I can't help more.

herbgarden, i reacted pretty strongly to entocort- fever, chills, and tons of diarrhea and cramping. you should know that i practically wanted to kill myself on prednisone though- everything bad that could happen did happen. if prednisone never helped him, then i'm fairly sure he might react the same.

i have been on 9mg oral entocort for about a month and the only thing i've noticed was headaches and sleeping problems, no help to my UC. I'm starting LDN, so want to quit the steroids does anyone know if i can just quit taking it or does it need to be tapered like pred?
