Total Max 5asa dose (Oral and Rectal)?

Hello. I was wondering if anyone knows what the total max dose of 5asa is using both oral and rectal forms? I tried searching but couldn't find the answer.

Most people use about 4g oral. And the rectal dose is typically 4g. It is not absorbed very well so I don't think there's a big concern with overdosing. But you should still have bloodwork periodically while on these meds.

I know the max oral dose is 4.8g. But I havent' heard of a max rectal dose. I take 4.8g of Lialda. And I've added 4g of Rowasa nightly. I also want to use a 1g Canasa during the day until things get under control. Called my doc but haven't heard back. Was hoping somebody on here knew!

I am on the max dose of 5ASA Oral which is 4.8g a day. Each Lialda pill is 1.2g, I have 2 of them (2.4) 2x a day (4.8)

The rectal mesalamine is 4g I believe and you're only supposed to do one because it only goes so far into your intestinal tract.

xfinite, you can even do mesalmine enemas during the day if you can hold them lol. Do some situps to get rid of excess gas, do the enema, wait about 40 minutes then go about your day... Try not to fart!!! And make sure you do a shower before this.

If you can do mesalamine during the day, canasa is also OK.

I would think the max dosage of the rectal would be 4g enemas twice a day.

You're fine with what you're using at this point.

We don't stay at the max rectal forever, it's eventually tapered, favourably to maintenance. however...and if you don't have pancolitis, I would think that the oral can be tapered (and I repeat tapered) to a lower dosage.

Thank you for the responses! Does anyone know if migraines have been associated with the sulfites in Rowasa? I get them from dairy and chocolate (which I strictly avoid). Started using the Rowasa 3 nights ago. Yesterday and today I have a migraine (which also triggers veritgo in me). It's not super bad....but I'm a little suspicious right now that it's the Rowasa. I see the sfRowasa does not contain the sulfites. But I was under the impression if you have an allergy to sulfites in that way you'd be laid up in a hospital!

The most i've taken is 4.8g oral and 4g Rowasa + 1g Canasa a day.

I think you need to continue the enemas and see if your migraines continue. What medications do you take for migraines?

I intend to! If I'm still having the vertigo/headaches by mid next week I'm going to ask for the sfRowasa.

I don't take any meds for migraines. Avoiding certain foods has eliminated them for me (THANKFULLY!). I had extensive testing done last winter that ruled out all other causes. Initially I went to the specialist because of near constant vertigo that I've had for about 20 years (since I was 11 or 12). Sounds crazy to have let it go that long but I was and am a very active person. I just learned to live with it and never really told my doc about it. In any case "migraine" doesn't always mean you have a massive headache. I occasionally get the headaches but mostly my migraines symptom is vertigo. It was very interesting learning about all this. I always thought the headaches were sinus headaches which apparently is a common belief among people who dont' get checked out properly. The symptoms are almost identical.

Do you classify yourself as having MAV?. ... I do know of some who have been helped by Singulair. Maybe that's an option for you.

Do you get nausea as well?

What is MAV? Singulair is an allergy med? No problems with allergies thankfully. I ruled out allergies/sinus problems as the cause of my vertigo by being put on allergy meds and nasal steroids once it was clear those (allergy meds) weren't working. This was over the course of a few years.

Migraine headaches can be very similar (pretty much identical) to sinus headaches. Even bringing on a "stuffed up" nose (only with clear mucus). The key difference is typically the nausea which does not come along with sinus headaches. That was one clue that what I was suffering from was migraines.

To rule out all possible causes of veritgo I went through about 2 1/2 hours of testing. Various eye tests while wearing special goggles with cameras that monitor your eye movement. Water pushed through each ear...etc. Fun stuff :)

I have BPPV...since 1966....

Singulair isn't an "allergy" antihistamine...it blocks specific reactions that could result in attacks of asthma, headache, coughing, etc...

Look into the above site, there is a forum there as well. I see there's a BPPV topic section as well.. I'll have to check out.

Ah! Duh...yes that's what I was diagnosed with (Migraine associated Vertigo).

I take 4.8gr of Asacol daily along with a nightly 4gr enemas. I usually only put in half the enemas because its easier for me to retain. Have been doing this for the past year and it seems to keep with in remission. My GI said I could also use a Canasa daily if I needed to settle thing down and then back off to using either 1 enema or 1 Canasa daily. My GI and PCP said very little of the rectal mesalamine is absorbed thru the colon.
