Thought I might be able to add another perspective.
I went on Azathioprine in about
2006 and have been on it ever since. My disease history was very similar to yours at that point. Although I am struggling now and am on remicade debating surgery I enjoyed a good 4 or 5 years on the Azathioprine and lived very well. The frequency of my flares reduced dramatically - and I consider pred more dangerous than 6MP. As my doc used to say - 'the main side effect of this medicine is that your colon will be less inflamed'.
about
2 months after I started taking it I remember it kicking in very specifically. My pain reduced right down and I even started going out jogging in the morning before work!
My advice would be not to let the disease win. Get it under control and enjoy your life. If you can't tolerate the 6MP then you stop taking it and you have lost nothing. I do remember bricking it before taking it though so totally understand what you are going through.
Good luck.
