Open a Window!

Okay. This will undoubtedly be my most unattractive post ever, but I just have to get this out there. The smell of my new "Paleo" poops could kill baby kittens.

Eggs and meat make my poop smell so badly that I wish I had an oxygen mask during my BM's. Before this, my vegan poops smelled fine- never an issue. I didn't need to open a window. Now, my cat won't even stay in the bathroom when I poop. She deathclawed at the door just so she could get out and not suffocate.

I am hoping that this great smell will go away once I get on the diet long enough or maybe somehow I'll get used to it (that seems HIGHLY unlikely). I feel like this quality of mine will easily make me undateable and I already feel bad for my family if they have to use the bathroom after me. I'm not trying to kill anyone here!

I guess I just posted this to see if these foods affect everyone's poop in a horrific way or if it's just because it's been about 5 years since I had any. I won't stop eating them just because of the smell mainly because those are the paleo food groups and I need food. Should I start taking digestive enzymes or just wrap my head in a towel to avoid the stench? The things I take in my sig. are accurate, but I have taken digestive enzymes in the past.

I guess I have to ask, what kind of smell, like sulfur gases.

If so this results from sulfate reducing bacteria.

I know my son before he got UC had horrible sulfur smelling gas,could clear out a room for 15 minutes,he ate a lot of meat.

But just in the past two weeks he went on strict Paleo,says he is doing much better on it,has no colon,not sure about his current smell.

He also this week will get a 1/4 grass fed cow,from local farmer. He got lucky to find a farmer who just happened to dispose of his small herd. Otherwise he says all the local grass fed beef is booked up

for about a year and a half.

He was not doing bad with a pouch for the past 12 years,but indicates improved digestion and poo quality.

I had some eggs while flaring a while back. I certainly didn't digest them fully, stunk so bad in the bathroom the paint started peeling off the walls, well almost.

I decided to have a little fun with the situation and called to my wife. She opened the door and took one step in before letting out a terrible moan and slamming the door behind her. She proceeded to yell through the door, "How on earth are you sitting in there?"

You might want to change probiotics and take a lot more of them. You cannot take too many or different kinds of probiotics.

During my last flare my girlfriend and I went on a 12 hour car ride to visit relatives. It was winter so no relief by opening a window. Most women have a very keen sense of smell as it is and her nose is more sensitive than most. I was afraid of gas so out of desperation I started popping probiotics like candy. At that time it was Mutaflor, no longer available in the U.S. The recommended dose was 2 capsules per day and I was taking 2 capsules per hour.

No BMs, no gas, no urgency. Of course I dared not beg the lightning to strike by eating gluten hamburger buns or carrageenan ice cream while stopping at McDonald's.

old mike, it just smells like rotten eggs and whatever meat i had eaten. it definitely has that sulfur smell i remember from chemistry! it might smell bad to me just because i had learned to hate the smell of meat over the years. i haven't brought my sister or mom into the bathroom to smell it for me.

babeinthewoods, maybe i will up my probiotics to 2 capsules a day and see how that goes. i have VSL DS in the fridge but i stopped taking it a few days ago because it's not Paleo legal. i spent a fortune on it but i really wanna follow the diet to a T. probiotics are so darn expensive anymore.

sunny, my meals have been eggs and veggies or meat and veggies. i'm only on day 4 of paleo so i'm sure my body is still getting used to things. i'm glad i'm not the only one with rancid craps.

I think once your system acclimates the smell will go away. I rarely have a BM odor and eat Paleo and as BabeITW says females have sensitive noses. If I skip VSL3 more problems including odors happen.

I really wish my bacteria would get back to normal so I didn't need probiotics but so far every time I try and drop VSL I have to add it back in. Oh well, it could be worse.

That's the pred for ya! Certainly, the reference was to Dr. Hay. LOL No disrespect intended, y'all. Had a brain lapse. :)

Now that you mention it, my BM's were pretty ungodly during my recent flare when I was eating whatever, but they have died down and become quite mild since I cut meat out of my diet.

In response to BabeInTheWoods: yes, you can have too many probiotics. You need to maintain a nice balance of the healthy bacteria... When I tried reintroducing a bunch of probiotic stuff during a couple-day stretch, it caused major diarrhea the next morning, which I almost never have. It is better to introduce small amounts at a time and slowly build up.

SS0000, haha death gas. that's what mine smells like, too!! i'm getting used to it as gross as that sounds. now i go in and expect to faint. at least i'm not surprised. i'm gonna take a digestive enzyme tomorrow just for fun and see if that does anything. just watch- it'll make it smell worse.
