Even if it is not effective when other treatments have failed, I still think UC'ers would love to be able to self inject! I think we see it as an alternative to Remi, not a replacement to try when Remi doesn't work.

I wish they would approve Humira and then recommend Humira before Remicade :(.

That's what happened to me. My GI wanted me on Humira before Remicade. I don't know how they go getting it approved for UC. I never had a problem. It's been working ,so I guess I'm lucky. I see more people online here on remicade then Humira . In the U.S it has to be an insurance problem for some. Hopefully things will change and it will get approved here for UC. So much easier to give.

It's also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other auto immune diseases. My mom is on Remicade for her RA but it's not working so great anymore....she may have to switch to Humira.

They should think about the patients like me who can't afford Remicade anymore. I can afford Humira, but my insurance denied it.

@Faithmac - it is an insurance thing. Humira has not been FDA (or government organization in charge of figuring out if drugs are safe) approved for UC yet therefore some insurances deny it the first go around. Of course, it depends on what insurance you have. Remicade is FDA approved for UC. Therefore insurances tend to approve it. If Remicade doesn't work or loses effectiveness, then some insurances allow you to try Humira.

I believe Humira is already FDA approved for RA so your mom shouldn't have any problems.

The two drugs remicade and Humira are very similar. So what's the problem? Humira is cheaper,because you have inject yourself. Why would my insurance approve it right a way, while other insurances deny . Makes no sense to me!

My colonoscopy last month showed severe pancolitis, a quantum leap from left sided UC for 10 years. All other medications have been tried over the years except the biologics which my GI said is the next and only treatment left for me. I've was taken off everything else and prescribed Lialda and Prednisone 20 mg. I hate prednisone. Been there and done that with this drug. It does all the things it's supposed to do but the side effects are awful. I have bruising all over, mostly my arms. The slightest touch cuts and bruises instantly. I have already checked out my insurance and I'm pretty sure Humira is covered with exceptions (an insistence by the GI usually). I can't wait to try it. I'm older than most and I want to get all options over with. If Humira (or Remicade) doesn't work, I'll have no qualms removing the problem.
