Just keep in mind, it's the colostrum that has the major source over the actual breast milk contributing to building a healthy immune system for a new born infant and the colostrum appears just before the breast milk does...bottom line though, being breastfed still doesn't stop one from developing an IBD...many of us are proof of that.

Also, some recent studies are showing that the benefits of breastmilk might be a bit overstated or oversimplified. I'm sort of sensitive to the whole "breast is best" campaign and the judgement that is passed on formula-feeding moms, because after struggling like hell to establish breastfeeding with my son, I lost my supply because I was so sick from the flare.
The article above talks mostly about
the undue pressure some women face, especially working moms, but also points to studies that show when you consider that most women who breastfeed also don't smoke, it's hard to say whether the babies are healthier due to the lack of secondhand smoke or to breastfeeding. Also, women who breastfeed are likely more intelligent and of higher socioeconomic standing than those who don't, so that might account for increased intelligence.
To be clear, I'm not saying breastfeeding has no benefit, because it does. I'm just saying that there is evidence it's not super duper superior.

I was breast fed for about
2 years. I think my UC may partially be a result of my smoking for a number of years and stopping. It starting full force about
a year after I quit.

Actually, the very first is even more what our mothers ate during pregnancy right? That is why I wonder with my mom and all the soda?

allswell, what your mom ate during pregnancy would very likely not have affected your gut flora. It's my understanding that gut flora does not start developing until after birth. Most OBGYNs now recommend that pregnant women limit caffeine during pregnancy, however. Who knows if it did or did not have an effect. Don't blame your mom, though -- she likely didn't know it was harmful.

I definitely don,t blame her and wiould never even mention it to her. I didn't get sick til after my kids so I know I didn'tbeatbthe best either or take folic acid because I thought I was so healthy even though I never had the best diet.little did I know what my body had in store for me. I question more the effectsvofbou high sugar intake on the un born and ourselves. Still I let my kids eat junk. Old habits are hard to break.

This issue can be debated till the cows come home with full udders.
Let's do the left-handed thread next, OK?

Maybe not significant re. UC but apparently it does correlate with intelligence at 5 years:

Ah there is some data indicating a correlation between non breast-feeding and both UC and CD. Not that strong but the nevertheless...

I was not breast fed. I badly want to breast feed my child (due December) but I'm not sure about
Lialda and breast feeding. I don't want her to have issues like me, but can't help but worry. No one else in my family has anything, just me, so I'm hoping to keep her away from environmental factors and give her the most potential to be healthy.

^^ Lialda will have NO influence on your child during breastfeeding.
And if you're flaring, you should add the rectal mesalamine for sure during that time. Just don't get to the point where you cannot deal with functioning because of a flare.

I haven't had a flare in nearly 3 years (20 years of having severe UC that never let up,) that's why I decided that it's a good time to for hubby to knock me up. The Lialda has been my savior. I can't function with the enemas. They keep me up and I definitely can't do my job the next day after using. I'm just hoping my luck will stay the same for the rest of the pregnancy and breast feeding. I just got off topic, sorry

Congrats on your pregnancy! I'm also expecting, but am not as far along as you. I am on Apriso plus twice weekly mesalamine enemas and doing well. I'll probably get an Rx for Canasa to use after the baby arrives, as I imagine using an enema with a newborn's unpredictable schudule will be hard.
My first (and so far only) flare started shortly after my son was born. I
ended up losing my supply I was so sick, which sucked. At ant rate, I'm going to try again, with the hope I won't get as sick this time because I know what's wrong and won't go untreated for so long.
Best of luck to you.
