Im sure this has been discuessed in length before but I'm interested in what everyone's opinion is of drinking alcohol with UC. Does anyone do it? What do you drink? How often? Is it okay to do so?

It affects people in different ways. Some can't tolerate any, some drink all the time with no problems.
Myself, I've been a drinker all my life but since DXd with UC in 06 I've cut back. It's down to common sense. Most people do ok with wine and beer, but contrary to what you might think, some get away with hard liquor. Alcohol is alcohol at the end of the day.
FWIW, I put away about half a bottle of wine, a large gin and tonic (it's been a hot summer after all) and occasionally a a couple of beers (tall boys). I'm at an age where I don't drink myself to oblivion, just for the enjoyment. It doesn't seem to affect my UP as I tried not having any for a few days and I was still as sick as parrot. If you like a drink your mind will find any way it can to 'justify' why it's ok, it'll find any flaw in an article that opposes it. And when you read a positive report it'll go woo-hoo!

My advice would be to experiment, trust me if it's bad for your own gut, you will know about it soon enough.

Then take the appropriate action.

I drink plenty when I'm in remission, with no trouble at all. But if I'm having any symptoms it does make things worse, so I try to limit my consumption to one or two drinks and try to stay away from the hard stuff. If I'm in a bad flare-up like I am now, then I don't drink any at all. (Same goes for caffeine.)

Actually I have had luck with Vodka so far. Tried beer recently(I love craft beers) but it really gassed me up bad. I'll give it another try though since it is football season!

That's true, I think non-grain distilled liquors, that are clear, are best. I'm just as bummed, last year I turned 21 and feel like I haven't had much to drink since. ;(

I was also under the assumption that drinking clear liquors such as vodka would bhe easier on the insides then anything else. I'm also a big craft beer fan and also work in the beer industry so enjoying a beer or a few is .something I would hate to give up. I tested it out with a few ciders last night and everything seems to be ok.

I'm a tequila drinker, I love the nasty stuff, but it gives me diarrhea and cramping badly every. single. time. I drink it. It hasn't ever seemed to "cause" a flare up, but it definitely makes me feel yucky. Beer makes me gassy, but I usually only have 1 glass, so I'm not sure what larger quantities do. Sangria (not a wine drinker, per se, but I do like a yummy home made sangria) seems to be ok for me, nothing noticed when I drink it.

Seriously, I've tried both ways...to have and not have. Doesn't seem to make much of a difference with me. Now, butter cream frosted chocolate cake, and I'm dying the next day.

89 - sorry for the ignorance but i was never anything but a beer drinker, which doesn't work for we ex-gluten folks, so what are non grain choices - not that i NEED to drink, but i am married so it would come in handy once in a while :-)

I have no problems with alcohol -- I normall stick to wine and beer, but I'll have an occasional margarita. I usually stop at one or two drinks (not due to the UC, but due to not really enjoying getting buzzed any longer), but have gone beyond that a couple of times since being diagnosed. And, as a disclaimer, I'm not drinking anything right now as I'm pregnant.

There are several non grain based Vodkas. Some made with potato, some made with soy, and some made with grapes. I have not had a problem with the grain based ones but this week I bought a potato vodka(viking Fjord) just to see if their is a difference.

My GI has told me several times to avoid alcohol. In fact, he said no food will cause a flare but, in his opinion, alcohol can. I know this isn't necessarily the case with all. However, I've drank 3 times since I've been diagnosed and flared within a week each time. Could have been a coincidence but I'm definitely avoiding!

I cut my drinking down to almost nothing years ago because I think my liver has enough challenges dealing with all the medication I have to take. Now I'm on Tylenol, so couldn't drink anyway. I do have a glass of wine or sangria on rare occasions without problem.

yeah, the liver should always be at the back of one's mind considering the meds and just having UC.   Yes, and most of us use Tylenol rather than NSAIDS.
If one drinks alcohol, smaller amounts are easier on the liver than binge drinking.

Maybe using milk thistle and or NAC is a good thing...after or continually..I don't know which would be best.
