I'm honestly starting to think an alternative to mesalamines would be air, at this point.

This may sound like a stupid question but is 'psyllium seed' the same ingredient as that used in Metamucil??

I also definitely agree with anti-inflammatories mentioned being Boswellia, Curcumin, and psyllium. Bee pollen and Terramin Clay may be good to try as well.
Also have you tried Liquorice Root?? i use it and it helps.

Conquer UC, Metamucil is made with psyllium husk. Proponents of psyllium seed say the seed is superior to the husk... there have been many threads about it in the past, but I don't recall any of the details of how or why it is different.

How far apart do you have to take the slippery elm from other things. I'm always afraid it will block absorption.

Yes I take licorice root already for adrenal support with prednisone taper

Just a heads up regarding my experience with coffee, before my colitis really got bad.
I would wake up feeling absolutely wrecked before even getting out of bed...
Needed caffeine just to get going in the morning and then through-out the day.

Seems my adrenals were on the way out, so caffeine became the crutch to lean on.
Poor old adrenals finally burned out 2009. Didn't know then, but I do now.
Colitis got steadily worse until I finally got a colonoscopy in 2011 which confirmed pancolitis.

Now need to avoid caffeine/sugar/milk/soda as these drain my weak adrenals and deplete the body of much needed anti-inflammitory hormones. (read: big colitis flare)

If anyone finds that they cannot function without caffeine, beware. This could be your body telling you that your adrenals are just about burned out and you could eventually end up with colitis. Not today , not tomorrow but next year or five years from now.

Listen to your body. I didn't. But I do now.

Noticed no one mentioned Chinese medicine + acupuncture as an alternative treatment. I am on it now and I haven't noticed much change but granted I have only been on it for 3 weeks (apparently it takes at least 3 months).

I personally am suspect to its efficacy but I am happy to give anything a try.

Its possible that chinese medicine/acupuncture would help but please,please,please get an official DX by colonoscopy from a reputable doctor.

Just 50 years ago this dreadful disease killed a significant proportion of sufferers.

Your life is too precious to try to treat yourself by acupuncture needles/herbs alone.
Yes, 50 years ago I would have gone the chinese medicine route as that was probably the only hope.

But today, at least have a backup medication plan before you go down the alternative route.

I'm told that UC is a disease of the developed western world.
The reality is that some of us would not be here today without western pharmacutical drugs/surgery.
Is it really fair to expect eastern traditional medicine to deal with western lifestyle related diseases?

We don't have the option to go back in time and quit the western world. The damage to our bodies was done before we realized we were being duped by the food industries into consuming their crap.

It is now a damage limitation excercise until the body is healed.

Personally I went to a naturopath and actually presented him with a list of my symptoms.
A child could have read my symptoms list and matched them to UC. But not this naturopath. Didn't have a clue. Gave me this awful stuff to drink. It never helped the colitis and I never went back. In fairness he did advise me to go through with the colonoscopy (as if I needed the encouragement)

I am having side effects to mesalamine.

My ears are ringing and I am getting headaches. I also feel like my balance is not right.

The Pharmacists (I've talked to 3 of them) have said that it may be Salicylate Sensitivity. It can affect the vestibular system, as I learned from my further readings.

It concerns me b/c the 5ASA drugs seem to help prevent colon cancer.

I want to take it, but I'm getting signs of intolerance, toxicity, etc.

Ideas?

i certainly would consider replacing the mesalamine with curcumin - have you ever used mesalmine enemas ? how often are you using the suppositories ?
