OT: Kudos for Dr. Mercola

I always conceded that Dr. Mercola's website has good information about health and nutrition but I did not appreciate hawking of what I thought were his overpriced products and supplements. And I don't like that his information is not completely freely available; that you must sign into his website to read it. I still think he may be a mercenary at heart but I must now give him credit for supporting California's Prop 37: Consumers Right to GMO Labeling.

Health advocates are being outspend by over 8 to 1 by large corporate interests. Without Mercola it would be much worse since he contributes over 25 percent of the money in support of the labeling initiative. Big money interests who are against labeling include the usual suspects such as Monsanto but also companies you would least suspect such as Kashi, Silk, and Horizon Organic.

California always seems to lead the way in consumer protections. Good for them, hope the good guys win. Sellers shouldn't be afraid of labeling, many people don't read it anyway and don't care about anything except the lowest price. Has labeling cigarettes decreased sales?

I feel the same way about Mercola, good information for the most part but heavy handed pushing their way or doom.
I don't agree with everything he says but not as bad as some.

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is. Give Mercola credit for contributing over $1 million to support consumers' right to GMO labeling. Meanwhile the CEOs of Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Hain Celestial, and Newman's Own do nothing.

Do you think if they put GMO on the labels it will stop people from buying those types of food?

Realistically, it will probably reduce a tiny bit their sales but nothing too meaningful. The only way to truly stop this is to ban all GMO foods.

I think if you label foods GMO, it would make a huge difference in lost sales.And that's the reason they are fighting it so hard, and pumping huge $$$ into anti-labeling campaigns.

I sincerely hope that the labeling is passed in CA ... then the trend would hopefully trickle down to the rest of us. Yeah, Mercola has some doom and gloom in his daily newsletter headlines but I tend to ignore them and focus on the actual information presented ... doesn't bother me too much!

Unfortunately, a number of "healthy" products may tout organic but are still made with GMO ingredients, like some Kashi cereals (there was a big stink about Kashi a while back). The biggest GMO crops are soy, corn and cottonseed so baby formula, salad dressing, cereals and pretty much anything else with those ingredients likely have GMO ingredients ... it really reduces the field in regards to "safe" products which is why I have tried to avoid anything in a package these days.
