5asa intolerance

Would the symptoms come immediately, or within a few hours of taking 5asa? I wanted to get back onto them and was curious.

Doc doesn't want me on them until I see UC symptoms. I don't want to risk it.

I found that after 12-24hrs intolerance shows up. Dark brown urine, fever, extreme fatigue.
The culprit was mixing with ibuprofen. Nobody told me this was dangerous.

5asa's don't do much for me otherwise.

I found that quitting tea and coffee put me in remission after two weeks.

It also helped a lot with back pain (suspect RA but no official DX)
Link between RA and colitis? Thats another thread but I have killed two birds with one stone
by quitting tea and coffee.

For me, the side effects occurred pretty soon after. I had severe pains in my stomache area that sent me to the ER. Turned out it was pancreatitis from the meds. Good luck!

Have you been on them before with negative effects? You're the one whose doc doesn't want to Rx them until you have symptoms, right?

Yes, Fruitgirl. Which I'm kind of thinking "what?!", so I'm wanting to test it out just to rule out an intolerance.

I was on Salofalk and I had increased bm's, cramping when I never had it before, more blood. Generally not feeling well. I was originally going about 10 bm's max before my dx, then I took the meds and I was going 15+, sometimes 20 or more.

So I never really figured out if it was an intolerance or my disease just progressing.

I guess if you're willing to give it a shot, you could. My guess is you'll notice something is up pretty quickly.

Unless your intolerance is to a secondary ingredient rather than to mesalamine. That seems to come up with the retention enemas due to sulfite preservative. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
