I've been using the Rowasa (Mesalamine retention enemas) for months now. The one thing that is frustrating is that I cannot consistently hold all of the medicine in. l go for days with no issues, then a few days in a row where I cannot and I end up wasting some of it.
- First, I try to poop and I warm the medicine up to my body temperature during that time.
- I put 1/2 of the medicine in and then follow the directions. I vary, with seemingly no difference in outcome, between the lay on your left side position and the other chest position. When the uncomfortable feeling just doesn't go away I have no choice but to sit on the toilet and usually there is one or two marble sized poops that come out along with some of the medicine. Small enough material that I didn't know/feel I had to go, but big enough to be very uncomfortable when the enema is in there sloshing around in there I guess.
- I then take the rest of the medicine without issue and lay down again to make sure it absorbs.
I just hate wasting some of the medicine like that. I always do 1/2 first, just in case I expel some of the medicine as then I know at least some of it is retained. I've tried taking the enema at different times of the day with no real consistent difference in outcome.
Wondering if I can get a generic, refillable enema to clear things out first (if such a thing exists).
