Do your GI's do ultrasound?

My GI in Germany used to do this every time I went to see him. My current GI says it's "outdated" and he doesn't want to do ultrasound plus he doesn't even have the equipment. Back then my GI was able to see the inflammation and one time he was able to diagnose a pancolitis this way. Is it really that outdated to do ultrasound for UC?

my GI doesn't do them. I would think this would be much nicer than a cscope or endoscopy!!

My daughter had one the same day after the endoscopy & colonoscopy in the hospital.

I think it was great to be able to see especially for her as it helped us understand more. She used it for reference to the inflammation for the stomach, pancreas, & colon.

Oh i did forget to mention, doctor just ordered an MRI for her. Not sure if its just because of the indeterminate issue, or something further. The MRI looks to be a great tool to get us to the bottom of this!

MRI is nice for diagnosis although the procedure is not too pleasant. I guess GI's in the US just don't do ultra sounds too often. Thanks for that feedback I was just curious.

I had one for my liver/gallbladder/pancreas, but not for my colon.

SupportiveMom...The MRI would probably be the MRCP -- which has a "contrast" type of solution that lights up the bile ducts/liver/gallbladder/pancreas.

had an ultrasound 6 years ago ,when complaining of left sided upper pain at that time I was already diagnosed with proctitis. He was a very old Dr. in his 70s,haven't had one since.

I had one done last month but I live in Asia. Initially, my GI did it to look at my liver but then he went on to also check my stomach and lower abdominal area where the inflammation was.

I should mention I'm in Canada, which can make a difference with our socialized health care.

The mrcp- it only reads part of the intestinal tract? I wasn't explained the detailed purpose just that it was needed to better assess the disease. Her colitis showed everywhere in different ways, some looking to be Crohn's like, others more like UC. She had inflammation in her stomach, pancreas, liver & colon. A few other locations I have to look up what the words were.

What is your experience with it?

We have had it done for my daughter twice. We were told it's reliability depends on the accuracy of the radiologist who reads it and since we were at the top pediatric hospital in Canada they felt it was a good way to check for inflammation and rule out toxic mega colon. Of course, it's older but ultrasound technology (we were told by the GIs) has improved quite a lot in the last few years. Of course, it's not as accurate as an mri or a pillcam but it's relatively harmless and a good way to check for non microscopic inflammation from what I understand.

i honestly can't even count the number of ultrasounds i've had from my GIs over the years. it's at least 12-15. my GIs order them for everything! i've had them for my abdomen, liver, legs, arms!

I'm in Europe - all of the GIs I've had do them. Didn't ever have it done in the US.
