Coffee ground-like poop

Know I I have heard about this. In a flare and noticed this the past few days, but also had a bad cold for a week. I have seen this before too. Is it digested blood necessarily?

I get that as well when flaring...

"digested" blood would be from the stomach or small intestine. 

Darker red is usually from higher up in the colon, but that type of bleeding isn't with UC and flaring

is it black?


If you're UC flaring and bleeding, it'll be obviously red, especially around the edge in the toilet and on the toilet paper.

What you're seeing is probably stool and mucus all broken up, not solid.

Are you on meds?

I've had it, don't know why or what causes it, mind you after 21 yrs I've had all kinds of alien-looking poops so I tend not to get freaked out by any of it since the weirdo poops don't tend to stick around long enough to cause alarm, but if it continues for more than a week maybe call your doc.

It's really dark brown, looks grainy, like dirt or chunky sand, coffee grounds definitely. I have a colonoscopy on the 29th. A, currently tring colazal for about 21/2weeks.

ask the doc if you can do a stool test just to rule the upper gastro bleeding out.

Methinks it's flare related, but as others pointed out...call your doc.

My poop is almost permanently coffee ground like anymore. You should talk to your GI BUT chances are it's just the way you are processing food, it's probably flare related. Alot of us have flares that produce this kind of poop without any blood. Has UC for 15 years, been in the middle of a 2 year flare right now adn I have never had blood once in all my years. It's the uniqueness of our disease, everyone is different but I wouldn't freak out too much

I produced what I would call "sludge" alot. It would be coffee ground texture and a bit dark, but never coffee ground black. If it is coffee ground dark, def. call your GI.

Yes it's dark., I called but will probably hear from her tomorrow. I am wondering if it is related to starting colazal. I think the timing coincides.
