Hey all

I think i may have asked this before but for a couple of months I have been having nausea, loss of appetite and last night woke up in a cold sick sweat, I had to go have a BM which was formed but very skinny.     When I was on Pred I had night sweats but I am not on it now.  I have asked my GI about my meds causing nausea but she doesnt seem to think so.   The nausea gives me a loss of appetite so I have been eating very little.   Does anyone else suffer loss of appetite and nausea with their UC?    My BMs are 1-3 a day,  they go from formed to somewhat loose, no blood.   Today I feel pressure in my rectum, maybe I should go back on the hydrocort enemas? 

At this point the nausea is my biggest issue and my Dr has been no help other than prescribing something for me that puts me to sleep.

Can you not take any of the 5ASA (mesalamine) oral or rectal meds?

Yes, of course, if you can't take the 5ASA meds...get back on the cort enemas.

What have you been given in the past for nausea? Dicyclomine is of great help to me.

You could also try something like Gravol ginger caplets or ginger or peppermint tea.

I am on apriso, I am wondering if that is what is upsetting my stomach. I have been given Levsin and Phenergan, both of which is hard to take during the day.

I am wondering if other people suffer from nausea with UC.. I rarely see anyone speak of it. I am beginning to think I may have other issues.

low rectal inflammation can cause nausea...I have flares where I'm severely nauseated. Actually continual nausea can be my symptom of a flare.

Bentylol is my best friend..lol.

As well...to note that if I have too much fat with garlic, nausea is something that happens to me. ugh.

Forgot to mention that reflux can also cause nausea.

You're still rotating the enemas..one night Rowasa, the other steroid?

I think lots of UC sufferers feel nauseas at times.

Sometimes I feel nausea during BMs, other times when my transverse colon is moving.

Well I havent really been keeping up the enemas.... because my BMs were good.... but the nausea I suffer daily. I am starting back on the hyrdrocort enemas tonight.

Hmmm. Are you female? Your age + night sweats could = menopausal. My UC started at almost the same time as peri-menopause and was confusing to say the least. Nausea could also be hormonal. Just an idea.

One of the few (only?) benefits of UC is that my menopause symptoms felt like a vacation compared to UC. But then I never had nausea. Sorry you do.

I agree with Imagardener re likelihood of night sweats coming from hormone changes in middle age. Are you taking any multivitamin supplement daily? If you're in the US, I'd recommend trying Centrum Silver for a couple months at least. Getting your body chemistry in good balance should chase away nausea, too. In the meantime, you could try sipping a little natural cranberry juice in the AM. Have some plain water, too. That has helped me to overcome nausea in the past. Nausea & loss of appetite can & must be overcome in order to get UC under control-- because, obviously, the body needs essential nutrients & adequate hydration to function properly. Pressure in the rectum can have many causes, not all that serious. Be sure to keep hydrated at all times while on 5-ASA med. I know that Apriso contains some ingredient that can really dry a person out-- because I'm hypersensitive to it! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Thank you all for your responses. I am 51 and had my last period 8 yrs ago due to graves disease (Hyperthyroidism). can you still have night sweats this many years later?

I wnt to try home remedies for the nausea as I have to work and cannot take Phenergan during the day. While on oral Prednison back in September I put on 10 lbs. Now that 10 lbs is gone and I am back at my beginning weight but I am afraid if I cant control the loss of appetite and nausea I will lose more. I am open to any home remedies you all may be trying. Again thanks again!

Try starting a new thread calling Judy2 for advice-- because she has experience with UC and Graves and is a recently retired RN, besides. She used to be a co-moderator here, but now moderates on the thyroid forum. However, she still visits here from time to time and always gives very helpful advice. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I have the nausea and SERIOUS cold sweats when I don't feel well.  It's a cold, clammy sweat and it is definately linked to my UC because it's a symptom that occurs only when I have a flare (no matter the degree) ... or just an unpleasant bathroom trip.

I'm 35 so I'm pretty sure it's not hormones.  I almost wish it were!

Dump the Phenergan in a drawer and ask your doctor for the generic form of Zofran.  It is called Ondansetron.  They are sublingual - melt on your tongue.  Taste a little like a baby asprin.  They come in 4mg or 8 mg.  I have both.  I take whichever one I think I might need.  Obviously the 8 is stronger than the 4.  The only side effect from the 8mg is a headache. I do not get headaches from the 4mg.  If I take several in a day my eyes get a little blurry, but other than that there is no side effects.  They do not make me sleepy.  This is a drug that people getting chemo often take.  You can even take it if you are pregnant.

Be sure to ask for the generic form though as the brand name are hundreds of dollars more.  I get a 3 month supply at 4 per day through Medco for 80.00.

They work in 3 or 4 minutes.  It is a miracle.  I keep them stashed in every pocket, purse. jacket, at work, even in the potty where the nausea often hits me suddenly.

You won't ever take Phenergan again!

I am just amazed how 3 nights of hydrocort enemas can make the world of difference. No pain, no nausea and I am eating. My only concern is how long can I stay on them. <sigh>

Hi..good you're improving. Maybe now's the time to start alternating again...or, continue them for maybe up to a week, then alternate.

Hi. I suffer nausea too. Lately, I rarely get it, but for about a year or two I was gettng nausea almost daily. This was when I only had mild rectal inflammation and very few UC symptoms. I was never sure if the nausea was related to the UC or my UC meds or what. I asked my GI's nurse about it and she said it isn't from the meds but who knows. All I know is it sucks! Hope you feel better soon.

I don't know how long you have been of pred, but I was nausea for months after weaning off.

Try candied ginger.

I had nausea for a little over a month but it got to the point I couldn't keep water down. I went to the hospital and got nutrition in a bag and I stopped getting sick. I have night sweats too, they started when I started Remicade but I don't know if it's related. Also, since Remicade my hair has been falling out :( Weird...

I'm dealing with the same nausea issues. When I was younger, 14-19 Zophran (ondansetron) was my go-to for nausea, and occasionally phenergan. I remained in remission for 7 years until this past July (I'm 26). No amount of Phenergan (suppository or oral), helps, sublingual or pill Zophran, Reglan, or Bentyl helps my nausea. I gag several times a day, and will even vomit often - even if I haven't eaten anything. I've tried ginger candies and peppermint as well. Nothing works. I'm hoping people There are other people who will suggest drugs for nausea. Someone mentioned Dicyclomine. I've never tried that and will ask about it asap.

It's very common for people with UC to get night sweats. Our colons are inflamed, therefore with any kind of inflammation in the body sweats can occur. When I was in a terrible flare I get them every night. Since going into remission they are less and less. Once I started on Hyrdrocordisone enemas they have been coming back. It can be a predisone thing as well since steroids can make you have night sweats.

If you have UC, why are you taking aspirin ? I didn't think we could take this.

Could this be the cause of your nausea, as it could be acidic on your stomach area ?

How long have you been on the aspirin, compared to how long have you had the nausea ?

PS I could be completely wrong also :)
