How to describe this? Continuous groove on stool

I got UC and confirmed by colonscopy Oct. 08.

In remission from Aug. 2009. At Dec. 2009, flexible sigmoidoscopy showed that I am still in remission.

These days (3 months? I think), I occasionally found continuous groove on my stool,

How can I describe this correctly to my GI? groove? dent? or even fillister?

When I met my GI last week, he even didn't talk with me when he heard that I was in remission. After prescribing some 5-ASA enema and ordering a blood work, he let me leave.

I asked for a colonscopy since I have not done it for two years. He told me:"It is unnecessary.Normally we repeat colonscopy after 8 years. If you really want, I can arrange one next year."

Should I concern this groove on stool? Thank you

groove in stools? how large is the groove- deep one? something blocking the passage.... do u feel any pain with passing stools?

Normally the groove is shallow.
No, I do not feel any pain and incomfortable. No blood, no mucous
I notice the groove just because I watched my stool everyday since I knew I had UC.

If you're in remission, could just be IBS....rectal tension or tight sphincter during bms, fissure, hemmie, polyp type thingies.

The anus is like UUUU  so if one of the areas is a bit tighter, it will put grooves in the stool, especially if the stool is somewhat softer.  Think icing piping bag..lol.

It would usually be on the posterior side, in other words, closer to the backbone...

Yes, I notice this sometimes.  It doesn't worry me as long as I'm not noticing other symptoms as well.

A little too late for me to jump on the thread but I'm experiencing the same thing as well. 27 years old and usually have BM with grooves/lines going down them. I'm very scared and nervous for my colonoscopy coming up next week....anyone else experience BMs like this?

The grooves and flat stools concerned me as well. Had me thinking there MUST be something like scar tissue or more polyps blocking the tract.  However, that is until someone on this forum explained that the inflammation generally causes these flat or "grooved" stools. After that comment, I actually realized that there is a definite corelation. I have a low dose pred that when my inflammation won't go down, I fill the script and take for a few days-- just till the inflammation goes down and the flat or mishapen "groovy" stools get better. LOL

Thank you for the information. By any chance, have you ever had a colonoscopy? I'm not sure what to expect...as far as the news they give me after. I noticed my BMs always had a line/groove going down them since May. Majority of the times I see the line/groove and other times (which is occasionally) I won't. It's just a straight line going down my BM. I've read some other posts and blogs where people experienced the same thing. And I was trying to get updates but its been a few years back.

A little late to join in here, but thought that I'd share my experience. Noticed a groove in my stool a few months back and finally went to see the doc. He tested my stool for occult blood which turned out positive, which completely freaked me out.

I had a colonoscopy this morning and the cause was determined to be a polyp. I would encourage everyone to go get these kinds of things checked out, as they are most likely something benign, but they could also be something more serious. Better safe than sorry, and the colonoscpy was a breeze (and the prep for it wasn't too bad either... at least not as bad as I was expecting).

this is all really helpful. thanks for sharing your experience. i am 34 and have been experiencing a groove down the side of my stool consistently for probably 5 years. my mother had colorectal cancer in her late 50's and has had several (i think 8) polyps removed from her colon over the years. after experiencing daily bleeding from my rectum and in my stool for a month and a half, i recently made my way to a GI doctor due to the eventual pain and persistence of blood. my doctor was alarmed that i hadn't yet had a screening with my family history. i have a colonoscopy scheduled in a few weeks. i have, what i've thought was a hemorrhoid, at the opening of my rectum for about 7 years. hoping that's what is causing the ridge, and a fissure tear that was causing the bleeding. but I'll have more information after the colonoscopy. if i learn anything about the ridge, I'll definitely share it. good luck to everyone.

Sounds like your ass is slowly becoming a Play-doh Fun Factory. Before long you should be able to shape Stars, Triangles and Squares. I can do a Hexagon and a Crescent Moon. yeah
