6mp and itching/rash

Hello, my 10-year-old daughter was diagnosed with UC in August. She's been on numerous meds, trying to find something that works for her. Lately the 6MP, Rowasa and VSL3 have been working for her (since January). Last Thursday she developed a rash that itched like crazy. We thought it was something she ate. It cleared up this morning, but now she's got terrible itching on the bottom of her feet.

Could this be from the 6MP? Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I did leave a message with her doctor to call me in the morning.

She takes nightly enemas of the mesalmine and I'm really proud of how she's taking to having to do that. She can now self-administer and has been able to have sleepovers and feel like she's just like her friends.

Yes to the rashes! Ever since starting 6mp I get random rashes that crop up out of nowhere. I have a chronic rash on my face from it and I have to use two creams to control it. I asked my GI about it and he mentioned that rashes are a possible side effect of 6mp - found the info online as well. He also mentioned that just having Uc can cause rashes - but I find that hard to believe since I never had rashes until I started on 6mp.

Meep, I hope it is not a reaction to Rowasa. I am not sure about using rectal 5ASA if you don't tolerate oral well.

Sherry may know better, she can't take any mesalamine medications.

And with the mesalamine meds such as Asacol, Lialda, Pentasa and Apriso, I get the same side effects as your daughter. But with the Rowasa, I would get the same thing, but it would also cause me severe intestinal pain. Yes, it helped my Uc but the side effects made me feel horrible - like I had the flu.

Bella: I am not sure if you're in the US but if so, worms aren't FDA Approved here and I don't know of any clinical trial available at this time. You would have a hard time getting a doctor to give you an RX for worms. I am not sure about the status of approval of worms outside the US.

There are a few companies that offer worms but they are about 3000 or 4000 dollars per infection and some of the worms only last a few years at the most (they could die much sooner). One company I have heard of is called "Autoimmune Therapies" and the other is called "OvaMed". I can't vouge for either company as I have not tried them. If you Google those names you will find them.

Good morning, I thought I'd let you know that my daughter ended up with an ear infection late Monday night. Her pediatrician says the rash may be related to the infection in her body. She still has it, so we're monitoring. If it's not one thing it's another! Be well.

I have been on 50mg/day 6MP for almost 4 weeks and today got an itchy red rash on my left hand and wrist for the first time.

It appeared about 9 hours after taking the 6mp dose (midday)

Drank half a pint of beer + had a few peanuts about 7pm so this may be an interaction.

Anyway after about 2 hours the itchy rash disappeared.

Guess I learned the hard way.
