I started on Salofalk two days ago. This is my first time on a rectal med, I've only been on Asocol before this.

I have been having lots of bloody BM's and was passing lots of bright red blood for the last couple of months. Since yesterday I've noticed that I seem to be passing more black stool, rather than red. Could this be a side effect of the Salofalk or should I be more concerned?

Other than this I think I'm already feeling better and the flare is started to calm down!

I'd appreciate any advice/opinions! Thanks

Hi Ldarcy!

I know that black stool can mean that blood is coming from higher up in the colon or possibly the stomach, but if you are feeling better, it could be possible that your poos are slowing down and the blood is sitting in your colon longer. How many times a day are you going poopie and has that number slowed down? My husband had Diverticulitis and had a bad attack last year.. he was bleeding from the Sigmoid colon, but his poo was coming out really black, even though the blood wasn't that far from the rectum, so that is a possibility... I just wanted to share tha with you to prevent a freak out.. (i'd be freaking out).. lol...

I've never taken Salofalk enema's before, so I can't say if that is a possible side effect, but I did google it and I couldnt' find anything that said black stool was a side effect..

I would however keep aware how you are feeling.. It's good that you are feeling better, but if continues or if you develop a fever, or notice something different, I'd definately check it out..

Is the stool really black? Or is it just a darker color? I've been on Rowasa for a week and after the first couple days the bleeding really subsided and my stool is a dark brown...kinda strange color but I believe that is normal. The med in the enema gets absorbed into your colon and can do that.

If your stool is really black then I'm not entirely sure. Could just be older blood like Susie said.

If the Salofalk enemas are the same as Rowasa. It could be the enema that is causing your stool to look black. With mesalamine enemas you can get a myriad of colors.

I assume Salofalk is the same as Rowasa, they are both mesalamine.   The stools are not really black, more like brown with black spots.   It sounds like that is probably what's causing it, since I'm feeling good otherwise I will remain cautiously optimistic and just wait and see how things progress.

I believe Rowasa and Salofalk are the same...just different brand names in different countries.

Glad they are working for you. They seem to be helping me as well! yay!

I have this too 'black' stuff show up, too, after starting the Salofalk sups.

I asked the GI doctor and she said it is not "black tarry stools". She said true black stools stink like "rotten meat". Perhaps b/c it is old blood?

5-ASA (drug in Salofalk) is an antioxidant. To me, the black blood (jelly looking) looks the same consistency and size and shape as the red blood clots that I had before Salofalk.

I think the Salofalk just oxidizes the blood, turning it black.

sounds like a possibility, that and being mixed with mucus.

Nothing to freak out about, however.

food intake can also change colour in the stool as well as supplements....iron for example.
