I had colonoscopy with anesthesia and without.

Colonsocopy, are like IAS said, you always feel like taking a crap. it's really uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt.

I also had endoscopy with and without. That is intense without. After 5 minutes of the tube in the throat, I'm so tired....

You had a colonoscopy w/ no anesthesia?! Whoa. That is impressive. My UC is limited to my rectum and I tried once to do a flex sig w/out. I was so inflamed it hurt the second they put it in. I cried, my GI stopped and they knocked me out. Now my chart says I have to get anesthesia for everything. Lol

I always go without sedation and have never had a problem.  The first minute or so is very uncomfortable, and then it's just uncomfortable until the GI gets to the TI.  Withdrawl, which is the bulk of the procedure, is nothing.

Last time, the GI was training a fellow on an unsedated patient (me). He was clumsy and needed abdominal compression to reduce the scope, but even that wasn't a big deal.

When I compared a 20-minute procedure to hours (or perhaps days) of recovery, I'm glad to forego, hop off of the table, and get on with my life.

I had a very bad experience when I was put under for my colonoscopy. Apparently, the anesthesiologist had to give me a large amount of anesthesia because I wouldn't fall asleep. That's not how I remember it. Once they pumped my blood with it, I lost all consciousness or recollection of what was going on. When I woke up, I was so disoriented and assumed I had colon cancer. My sister couldn't even calm me down. And I was furious when she told me that they had said, they had to give me a large amount to put me under.

On that terrible day, I felt suicidal, which is foreign to me and I accidentally locked my sister and I out of our apartment. :( Cry me a river right? I really don't do well with drugs.

In China, they do operations, including colonoscopies with acupuncture...

I've had a dozen colonoscopies, my first ones when I was a teen. I don't know what they used because I preferred to be in the dark and let my parents do all the decision making. I woke up during the first one and was talking and watching the screen. They gave me more of whatever and I was back out :)

I know that as an adult they've all been done with propofol with no issues. Honestly, I prefer it. The first several were great and I was able to return to work the next day no problem. The past few times, since I've gotten old and fat, have been...off. 2 procedures ago I woke up angry and was kicking at all the nurses. They got my boyfriend at the time to come calm me down. He was a jerk and I hated him, I just wasn't aware of that :) I'm guessing that's why I woke up so cranky. The last time I aspirated and got pneumonia. It was horrible. I don't know why I vomited because I actually hadn't had anything at all to eat or drink and shouldn't have vomited. The administration of the drug and the recovery were fine and dandy, but that cough was awful. Between those 2 I had propofol to have my wisdom teeth cut out, and it was fine. No problems at all. I hate all dental procedures and was so anxious until I found out what they'd use to knock me out. Thank goodness for propofol.

If someone comes in to give you medication and you don't know what it is, ASK! I've done this while hospitalized and discovered some of the meds were not right. I asked the nurse to hold the ones that were wrong until I could talk to the doctor. Never take meds if you don't know what they are, and never assume it isn't something you're not supposed to be taking or are allergic to.

(I always take my own pill sorter to the hospital for instances such as this. Don't want to miss something because someone gets careless.)

I've always had c-scopes done with Versed/Demerol combo and it never bothered me until my gastro affiliated with a medical center that requires IV sedation rather than a shot. Yuck, I detest IVs-- having small veins. As one ages, though, Versed and Demerol can cause more after-effects, such as confusion or balance problems, because it takes the body longer to get rid of them-- possibly a week I heard recently at a geriatrics lecture. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

My DH is thinking of canceling his c-scope because of anesthesia concerns. A local high school boy, healthy 16 y.o. football-er, just died 2 days ago during a routine tonsillectomy at a local hospital. Yes, it could be something unrelated, but DH is concerned that because of propofol shortage here they may not be as knowledgable about the alternative anesthesia now being used.

And reading OM's info about Versed/Demerol brings up more reason to wait since he (DH) is 64. I however have loved IV sedation when doing big dental procedures, in fact insisted on it whenever possible.

I was given the Versed/ Demerol combo and I must say I felt SO GREAT afterwards, with such a feeling of total relaxation and peace and CONTENTMENT for an hour or two, that I would most definitely ask for it again! (Does this mean I could become a drug addict? lol) I never have felt that way with morphine or other pain meds. I had the best nap when I got home. And I was back to normal & was fine with driving & making dinner and such within a few hours of the procedure. (The doctor said they officially say 24 hours for recovery from that drug combo, but that I'd be fine in about an hour.)

I don't like the versed. My doc gives fentanyl/versed. 24 years ago I got valium in the vein, then Demerol, then Demerol/fentanyl IV and now I only want the fentanyl...

I request to stay awake but nicely stoned..lol.

Now that medical marijuana is legal in Massachusetts, maybe it will become an alternative.

Can you see everyone in the "pre-colonoscopy" waiting room with a joint??? :-)

I go for a scope in January and if it was just a scope I might do it awake but stoned like Quincy does but they are doing an Endo too and there is no way in He double toothpicks that I can do that awake. Yikes!

They gave me something to calm me down first, and then propofol. I remember nothing, and when I woke up they were taking the blood pressure cuff off of me and the IV was already out and taped up. After a minute I was able to go out, dress myself, and then my husband took me home. I was tired and a little stoned for the rest of the day, but I was able to go back to work no problem the next day.

I was really dehydrated so I got IV hydration for about 20 minutes before any drugs, so maybe that helped?

Michael Jackson died because 1) he wasn't being monitored properly 2) Propofol is not for use every single night for months and 3) he weighed about 12 pounds and had many, many other health problems. Not so much a concern for your average person.

LOL, It's always something! After the joint, everyone could sing "La Cucaracha", which is actually a joke about marijuana smoking.
