FYI.There is an protective association between being breast fed and UC.

You can bet that all these bacteria in breast milk are there for a reason and most of it is for immune function.

My mom's must have been deficient then. Lol My sister and I both nursed for 2+ years and we both ended up with UC. Bah!

I for one am skeptic...my mom developed UC, she was born in 1927 into a poor family, her mom (my grandma) breastfed all of her children and my mom still developed UC...my mom breastfed all of us as well, and I still developed crohn's.  I breastfed both of my kids and my daughter has gut issues (so far DX as IBS only)  Breastfeeding is no guarantee that one won't become sick with IBD or any other health issue.

I'll also add, that none of us breastfeeding women were on the heavy side either, being slim runs in our family, especially on my mom's side.

I dont think it makes a huge difference to your odds of developing UC later in life, I was breastfed until I was around 3. The last study I read about breastfeeding also showed no difference later in life in other aspects such as IQ, immuno systems etc.

There has been lots of studies on breastfeeding and its effects but very few have been able to compare two sets of children (one set more breastfed than the other) with the same environmental aspects and compare them later in life but there is one very successful study from Russia where children born in two closely located hospitals were studied. In one hospital they encouraged breastfeeding and less in the other hospital, which resulted in the children being more breastfed in the hospital where it was encouraged. The children from these hospitals were later studied as adults and no significant differences were noticed. So to any moms who feel bad about not being able to breastfeed for various reasons: don't!

if i could get my hands on some human breast milk, i would have NO problem drinking it. i have no shame anymore. i think the bovine colostrum i drink helps, but i'm sure my species milk would be even better. if my sister ever gets pregnant, she better share some with me.

Well, I suppose I shouldn't tell you all that I've been lactating (a small amount) since I was about 14 weeks pregnant. It's nutso.

However, my baby will be getting everything I produce. Pumping is a giant PITA and I'm not going to pump any more than what she'll eat when I'm at work!

Interesting study OM. I believe I was allergic to breast milk, and was immediately put on formula. Soy-based, I think. horrible colic also.

The statistical effect on IBD might show up more if one compared breast feeding in hunter gatherer societies vs modern societies where it is dropped earlier. i believe traditional paleolithic cultures breast fed for much longer than the few months tops that is common today.

for the record, in my mom's day, she was breastfed for longer than a yr due to them being poor...she also breastfed all of us for longer than a year...she and I still got sick....confirming there are no guarantees breastfeeding prevents IBD.

That first link sorta made me laugh. I was breastfed for about 18 months and had a tonsillectomy when I was 5. So much for helping me!

I posted about this very topic not long ago, as I was not breast fed (much to my disgust), but the consensus seemed to be no correlation.... sure wish I was though.

I just hope that my baby does not get UC or Crohn's like me :( she's breast fed. I was not. Whether it makes a difference for UC or not, I like to know that I'm doing the best I can for my baby by breastfeeding her. Nothing wrong with formula, but I think my little one will be better off with my milk, and she likes it. Husband tried to feed her formula one day where I slept really late, and she turned her nose up at it and refused to drink it even though she drinks from a bottle several times a day (I pump 3/4 of the time and feed at the breast the other 1/4). She was less than 2 weeks old-I didn't think they had opinions that early.

I guess will have to try to find where they all come from,are they actually in the milk or on the mothers skin.
This leads me to another reason for all these bacteria,and I assume they are friendly.
Remembering when my daughter was a baby and more recently my granddaughter,no matter how clean you try to keep them some poo might get into the wrong place.
Yet there is no infection,this might say that the immune system is very strong,and or the
poop pathogens don't exist yet,and you can bet it is desigend that way for a reason.
