So I realize that most people who are *not* sick, arent here. After all, why would you be? If you get well, you most likely move on.
That said, I want to know how many people have had meaningful remissions that were induced by steroids. Mainly hydrocortisone, but what ever.
Anyone? Even if they didnt last forever.

my dad. he was on prednisone for 6 months along with sulfa drugs and he's been in remission for 24 years. i know his worst symptom was bleeding and he gets it sometimes if he eats something that bothers him, but he manages without any meds.

24 years sounds like cheating! Ive probably been in remnission for about
8 months max from just prednisone. Not anymore though.

Twice I've taken pred and twice it's gotten me into remission. Pred courses were probably around 8 weeks, the first one (my worst and initial flare) may have been longer.
Both times I was also on Asacol.
First remission was less than a year I think and was a pretty unstable remission.
Second was closer to 3 years and included diet changes.
The flare after that I used nicotine to get in remission on top of the asacol and was glad I didn't have to do pred again. Side effects were worse the second time.
Still using the nicotine. Added mesalamine enema after a recent minor flare. Enemas have helped significantly with urgency.

When I was diagnosed, I was only on Asacol (4800 mg daily) and nightly mesalamine enemas. I was in a pretty severe pancolitis flare and was pretty close to remission on that alone, until I got a tummy bug that threw me back into the flare. At that point, I started oral prednisone. I wasn't on it for very long -- from mid-March to early May -- and the majority of that time I was only taking 10 mg daily or 10 mg every other day.
I've been in remission ever since (over 3.5 years now). And it's a been a completely symptom-free remission and a c-scope in October 2011 showed a completely healthy-looking colon.

First time I took prednisone along with Asacol and Rowasa...this was after my initial diagnosis of UP back in 1998. I enjoyed a two year remission (prednisone tapering dose and off it in two months). Second flare in 2002, back on prednisone but switched to Colazal as maintenance drug plus rectal meds. Remission after two months of prednisone once more. However, in 2003 I started to flare more frequently and it took me a longer time to get off prednisone. Long story short, I became prednisone dependent and had surgery in 2010

Have been on pred on/off since June 2011. Every time I come off it I flare within two to three weeks! Longest I've been off pred is 9 weeks. But for 6 of those 9 weeks I was flaring. I start on 40mg and reduce by 5mg a week! Will be finished this dose in 2 weeks and already afraid! Just hoping for a miracle and that the Humira kicks in by then!

I was just in a flare I was having up to 30 BMs a day. I have been on pred for a little over a month. I have just started humira (almost two weeks now) and am on day three of tapering off the prednisone. So far so good. I also take Lialda and canasa as well as a probiotic

I used pred to get into remission but unfortunately I couldn't taper off without having symptoms reappear. Eventually, I had to accept that I would have to start something stronger - I went for 6mp and now I am doing well and I've been in remission for well over a year. I did make the mistake of waiting way too long to decide to start 6mp and because of this, I was on prednisone much longer than I would have liked.

I think it's best to assume that you won't be able to taper pred without some help from asacol and/or rowasa and possibly probiotics. If that is not enough then imuran is the usual next step.
If you taper too fast, then that alone can be enough to restart a flare even if asacol and rowasa are working for you.
